Episode 6
Episode Six:
We have just finished watching Episode Six of Roots – the final episode.
Here is your final blogging assignment of the year:
Think back to the entire series. What theme has made the biggest impression on you over the course of the whole series? (Example: assimilation, separatism, slave ownership, slave trade, freedom, etc.) Talk about it in detail; give at least three examples of it throughout the movie. Tell why Roots was important to you (if it was) and why next year’s 8th grade class should watch it. Your essay should be of the usual length – 250-1,000 words. Include your name (first name, first initial of your last name and your hour) Example: BorisR, Hour 3
I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

ReplyDeleteThe theme that had the biggest impression on me was how bad slavery was. I was surprised by what they did to the slaves back then. The white people treated them like they were animals. They also didn't care about the black people at all considering their health. It was important to me because it informed me about how bad they were to them and it's a big part in history. Also, the kids next year should watch it because it gives them an idea of how it was. It would teach them about how much it has changed since back then, and it shows how it changes within the movie. They should also watch it because they would see differently on the subject, and maybe even feel their pain and suffer. They would learn all the things I did about this. It would also entertain them. It is a classic that everyone should watch eventually. I really liked this, and they would too. It is very informational about slavery. They would appreciate watching this. It can get a little confusing with all the generations in one movie, but it all makes sense eventually. It is also an experience to follow a certain character to write a blog about. It helps you experience what happened to them. You also get the feel that you were one of the people from that era. That's why the people next year should be watching Roots, because it is a good experience to have.
I Think this was a great thing to watch. I would highly recommend this for next year seventh grade. It was really interesting to watch. I think it would be really good for it to be watched gain next year. I think it explains a lot how the way slaves went through the civil war and how they were treated before that. I think it was a really great thing to watch and learn how it was started and how long it took for them to be set free. It was one of the most interesting videos I have watched and I think it would be great for it to come back for the next year seventh graders. This is a great educational series of movie that I think would be great for the next year and the year after think that the slave trade was really interesting how they auctioned off the blacks. When Kunta kinta was auction it was really interesting. As well when every other slave and how it happened. I think that's how the fiddler came here and every other slave as well.
ReplyDeleteRoots this movie shows how it would be as a slave back then. It shows how "Toby" was captured. He learned about American than there is an ocean. The cruel treatment shows how bad they it was. When Kunta "Toby" tried to escape he got whipped and got his foot cut off, that shows how bad it was. Roots shows how marriage was back then. When Toby's daughter was took that would be horrible. Never being able to see your own daughter. Chicken george wants freedom just like Kunta and he actually does by law. Then the war ended and slavery was illegal. So they got there freedom just like Toby always wanted. Until the ku klux klan came and attacked the ranch. So they made each horse shoe different to see if there customers are the ones that are apart of it. Then he turned it in to the police so he arrest them. Now it practically slavery they are working are debts that where already paid. They will get it some way.

ReplyDeleteEpisode 6
This movie was so amazing to watch. This video was so informational. I love this movie and want to watch it again. This movie gave me a new outlook on how bad slavery was. Everything about Roots entertained me. I loved the story and know what it was like back then for African Americans. I would hate if I was taken from my home and sold to be a slave. This movie told the story of how slaves were treated so badly. Even in the conditions they were in some were happy while others want to go home to live their life they had before. Everyone has a dream that the want to come true some don't get their dream but in this story many did when they got to be free from slavery. Once they were free they didn't know what to do. They want to start a knew life and make their other dreams come true. This improved my education and made me think and feel what they felt and thought. I think that every school should watch and learn about this so we don't make the same mistakes we made before. This movie helps us learn the everyday life of a slave. Many people in the South were upset about the slaves becoming free. While people in the North were happy, slaves didn't know what to do, where to go, or what was going to happen. Everything about this movie was amazing to watch and learn from. Everyone should watch this move, it helped me learn and was worth the time that was spent on it.

ReplyDeleteThis movie was the best movie ever i thought it was great. I thougt that it was a great use of time and that it has been fairley easy to do. It was sad at parts but really good. I thik that you should show it next year because i think it is so good that im going to tell my parents about it more to them and maby ask them to try to find it. I cant wait to hear the next set of 7 th graders on what they think about it. My favorite episode is the one whare chicken gorge becomes free. My least favorite episodes ar the episodes when kizzy and toby die.

ReplyDeleteThis video is a awesome video. It is worth my time. I have learned alot from this video. I learned how slaves were captured and how slaves were treated and what names they were called. It was like watching the discovery channel with my grandparents (which is really fun) . When I saw the slaves celebrate it looked like a huge win at the World Series. The roots story was really exciting at the beginning and I'm glad it ends good also. I learned how dangerous the running away could be. I also learned they used to whip slaves and if they do something worse they sell them (depends on the slave owner). Each slave owner would have different expectations on the slaves. The video was would change your moods. The different moods I got were angry, sad, and happy. After the war was over people would attack black folks and burn everything. The only part I didn't like was writing the 250 words but it did bring my grades up a lot. People have changed over the movie by moods which made this story really exciting. This story of roots was the best movie I ever saw it was educational and breath taking. Thank you Mr. Jepma for letting us watch a fun movie.
I thought it was a good movie, and yes it was not a waist of my time. I learned more about slavery and what it was like then I knew before. I learned that most of the slaves that came on the ship died on the voyage over to the United States. I learned that how they treated them and how they sold them and cleaned them. I learned that Toby would act in the movie, like in the beginning he would run away. I learned that how Toby pasted the way of the people, like his people in Africa. I know now that most of the whites didn't treat them nice and they would whip them if they ran away and got caught. This movie showed that they were all different, like what the girls and boys would do. They showed how they celebrate when they were free and when it was a holiday. They argued when they were mad at each other. I liked how many jobs to earn money like the cock frighting. I liked how they should a lot of what the life was like when you were a slave, they would show how they got treated like the food and they had to teach George how to talk to blacks. I liked almost all the slaves in the movie, although I didn't like all the masters in the movie. the war ended slaver and the slaves were free. They were vey happy, although they didn't really. Ow what they were going to do. The president got shot and they were very upset. I liked the movie very much, because I learned a lot.
ReplyDeleteThis whole entire series has like changed me! Also why would this be a waste of time??!! From all of the happy moments to the sad ones, it was interesting for me to watch. All of the things I never knew about slavery back then.... I know now. Thinking now, we all have iPads and iPhones and were all happy today, but back then they never had any of those things and they were still happy! They dance, sang, and hung out with all of the friendly folks! I learned how bad escaping could be! If you run off once you could get a serious punishment like a whipping! I learned about all of the names they called everyone. This movie is so entertaining to watch, and also so educational! For me.. This movie was like being there... I felt like I was in their shoes when I was writing about them, and how they felt. Every night I would come home from school and I would like be so exited to come to school tomorrow so I can find out what's going to happen to Kizzy or Toby. Roots made me feel good about my self when I watched it. Why my reason is why they should show this to the 8th graders next year is because,... This movie will change anyone! Everything I said about Roots up above is all true why! Everyone should know what has really happened back in that time. Back when there was slaves and everything about this show! Some people my think " Hmm slaves,.... They are so weak... They probably don't try!" I would say to them " You know what?! Take this movie! It's called Roots. It's about the real life about slaves and how they acted back when your parents weren't even born yet! They worked their butts off every day of their lives just so they can come home back to their family's and have food. And you know what? If they don't work, they get whipped, slapped, punished so hard that they might even cut one of their hands off if they could!"
ReplyDeleteWell my reasons have been said. Roots has changed me and how anyone else will see this show too.
Ben DuRand 4th hour.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was worth it to watch it, cause we learned so much about how the blacks were treated back then. I'm glad that I saw this, i know so much more now. I learned what the blacks did when they were slaves and what they did after the were free. I also learned that the whites went to Africa, and captured wild black people. I think the 6th graders ahold watch it once they get to 7th grade because it was really interesting how things went back then.I'm happy things aren't like that now. The movie, has a lot of detail and explains a lot what happens.
I in my opinion this was very good stuff to learn about. I do not think this was a waste of time. I learned abut what the blacks would have to live like and what would be determined about them. I also learned from this that blacks could be thought of in different ways it all determined on how they acted. If they were very good and listened well they would have a lot of freedom, but if they were like kuntakinte and always thought about running away you would be treated very badly. No one would really think of you in a good way and they would work you until you couldn't work anymore. I really like how now I can think of these time periods in two different ways. Now I can actually realize that life then is so much harder than it is now, especially for the blacks. I like one thing that we learned a lot, what the blacks had to do as they were slaves, I didn't know that the whites would make blacks do almost everything. What I thought is that they would only make them farm, but they cook, farm, raise farm animals, and a lot more. One thing I also didn't know is how they took the blacks and how they shipped them back to America. I think this series Roots has been very useful and informational that you should keep playing this series for the upcoming years.

ReplyDeleteYes, you should show this movie next year. I think you should because you can learn something's about this movie when you watch it. Then if you show it again next year they will like it like we did and they wouldn't want to stop watching Roots. My favorite part about this movie is that the black people are free now and now they don't have to be slaves no work for them. It meant to me is that this was a very good movie and I hope you do so it next year so they can watch this movie. Their is some sad parts though out the movie but then their is happy parts in the movie Roots. My favorite part is when baby Kizzy was. Born she was a cute little baby and she had some hard times but she did get though them in this movie. My opinion is that this movie was a good one and the kid next year would want to watch it and learn about the black people's cutler and where they lived and where they had to sleep on the boat and what happened to them on the boat. When we first started to watch this movie I thought this movie would be ok then in the middle of the movie I started to like this movie a lot a now when we finish it I would want to watch it again and again because I do really like the movie Roots.
Jessicaz, hour 4
I think that this is a good movie to watch in school. I think you should continue to play it next year. It teaches what it is really like to be a slave. It teaches things I thought we couldn't learn just from listening about it. One example is on the ship. It shows what it is really like. There is many other examples in the movie.that is why I think you should keep on playing the movie. It shows how they got whipped. It also shows how hard they work. The white men were mean and called the blacks names all the time. They had no respect at all for them. I think you should keep on showing the movie. I don't think the movie is a waste of time. It is informational about the time when the black people were slaves. I think the 6th graders should watch it because they will learn a lot about the time when the black people were salves. I think you should continue playing it.
ReplyDeleteThis was an outstanding movie. I think that the next years seventh graders should watch this movie again. It was very interesting to see how Toby was raised, captured and being a slave. It was defiantly not a waste of my time. It had humor in it, some not so age appropriate things but overall it was great. I didn't like how we had to write 250 words at the minimum. It didn't raise my grade by much. The next years seventh graders will be very excited to watch this movie. I think you should lower the 250 words to about 100 words for the other kids next year. It was kinda weird how the whole movie was set up. Like the people, buildings. The thing I didn't like about the movie was how long it took for the class to move on to the next episode. I also didn't like how if you missed a day you still had to blog about what you missed. If you could some how send out the part of the video part so we could still finish it at home. Everything about roots entertained me. It was sad at the end of the movie. Because the fire burnt the crops. I really enjoyed the movie because I learned a lot about how it would be to be a slave and I thought it would be very very difficult for me to be a slave I would try to get free myself.
ReplyDeleteThe movie lets us know how they lived. It is educational because movies stick into my mind better than just learning them by reading. It shows the African Americans religions and beliefs. I t also showed how determined they were to be free. It showed how happy they were to be free our to just dance. It shows how harsh the whites punishment during that time. It tells me how hard it was to get to America by boat. It shows how much people have slaves and how much money they spent on them. Tells how each generation had there life. Show how people felt when the slave had freedom. It show that they all want to be as a faimly to the end. They have susprises in the movie that you would not find in a social studies book. It tells you why events happened that would normally not happen if we had no slaves and/or a war. It also relieves stress and lets you learn at the same time. It tells what they wore and what the whites wore at that time. I hope that six graders and others will be able to see the experience of the movie.

DeleteI loved watching the Roots episodes they were very interesting. I don't think that they were a waste of time. They were very educational and told a story of our nation, and related to what we were learning about in class. They were cool and enjoyable. It roped you in when the got on the ship, then the story continued, and it made you want to keep watching. I felt like it had a really cool plot/story line. Me personally would recommend watching Roots with next years seventh graders. It is a very emotional connective series, which kept me engaged the whole time, I think that would be good for this up coming class. But if they are not mature enough to watch it because there is some "language" in it. If you, Mr. Jepma, feel like they can handle watching it them go ahead. The blogging part of watching Roots was a good tool to make sure that your students are paying attention to what is going on in that episode. It felt time consuming, because we would spread them out and do thing in between episodes, but next year if you played them back to back, for a week and a day, maybe it wouldn't feel so long. I would hope that this up coming class would enjoy and be as engaged in it the 6 episodes as I was. I liked going home to my parents and having conversations about each episode we watched, because when they were growing up they would watch an episode every Saturday morning. Maybe this up coming seventh grade class can have that at home connection like I did. I really liked blogging about each episode and later reading what all the other kids in my class thought about each episode.

ReplyDeleteI thought this was great movie. I don't think this was a waste of time at all. I thought this movie showed how bad it was back during slavery. It showed how bad of a life of a black was back then. Even at sometimes when life was good it always turned out bad for the slaves. I also though this movie was interesting when they had the chicken fights. I liked that Toby always tried to keep his traditions from Africa alive. I learned that they were free during holidays. I learned that just being on the plantation wasn't the worst of it. The trip was what seemed like a lot worse than the living there. Many slaves died on the ship. It was horrible sitting in the bottom of the ship for months. When the president gets shot they are very upset. I also learned how the slaves got captured. The whites come and destroy the blacks buildings. I really enjoyed watching because it thought us a lot. It was also pretty exciting. I think it is worth to be shown next year. This was a great movie.
I think watching this series was fun. I don't think that it was a waist of time. It was fun learning characters and learning about our past. Most of the students in seventh grade enjoyed watching Roots. I think that Mr. Jepma should show the other students he has in the future. But the only thing about it is that it was hard to write long paragraphs with people that don't get shown a lot. I didn't know that slavery was like like that and now that I watched Roots I know how it was. I know it was sad and devastating but you can't change the past. My favorite episode was episode six because watch there reactions on being free and that they won the civil war. My least favorite episode was the one when Kizzy was taken away from her parents and the first one because kunta was taken away. I also like that Toby would not give up and he kept trying even though it wouldn't work out. It was sad when the owners would trust there slaves one point then the next they didn't have any trust to the blacks. But once slavery was done the whites went mad because they didn't have anyone working on there crops and cleaning there things. So some one killed Lincoln and the whites went and burned down houses and destroyed other people's things. They are also mad that the blacks have promision to go where ever they won't. That's went they invented the klue klutz klan. That's what happened during the civil war.
ReplyDeleteI think this series was the best thing I have ever watched in school. It has really useful information I think that a lot of people should know about. When we watched it I looked forward every day to watch it. My favorite part of it was when they were declared free. I think this is the most accurate movie I have ever seen on slaves. On the other hand I think the sixth graders would really enjoy it. I loved doing the blogging. I think it helped me understand more deeply how the character might think. I really liked understanding the movie much more deeply. It also helped me understand the black culture. And also how whites treated the black kind. Over all this would have to be one of my favorite assignments in school. At first I kind of didn't like it because I had a character that didnt have very many scenes and it was really hard for me. Then I got the hang of it and it was super easy. Over all this is my favorite project I've ever done in school.
ReplyDeleteI also think that in some parts it was pretty sad and some people may not like it. But that is part of the movie. I think people that don't watch it would miss out big time. I know most things are accurate in the movie because we learned about it in class. It is a perfect movie to watch in u.s. history.

I think that watching Roots was a really educational experience. I definitely think they should do this next year. I learned a lot of things about slavery, through watching roots. I learned how they just hunted people in Africa, put them on a ship, got them ready to be sold, got sold(practically became someone's property), and worked hard all day long. You had to do whatever they said, if you disobeyed you would get whipped. I didn't know how hard they made them work. Or that they hunted people. I learned a lot about slavery, that was new to me. I think it was good to actually have a person acting like it was that time, and having like a almost real perspective. It was a great use of time, and making the blogs helped me learn even more on how it would feel to be each person, rather then just watching it. I really liked the part when they, we're freed. Kunta always said that he would be free, and they did, so I liked how that part best. Though some parts were sad, I could still watch it. I also enjoyed that they had like different main characters, it gave a different perspective form each person. I really think the kids next year should watch it for sure, because I learned a lot and I think that they will too. I liked Kuntas attitude at how he always dreamed to be free, even after his foot caught off. He would be so excited if he would have gotten free, he ran off a lot, he was just that determined. He didn't want to be named Toby, so he stuck to his roots which is inspirational(could be why they called it roots). Overall I really enjoyed watching roots.
I think this is a good movie and it is a good movie. because it lets us now how the native Americans serviced in the slave years.how hard they had to work and if they toyed to run away they would have to get there privets cut off or there foot so they could not run away anymore and it was a good movie and I think you should show this movie next year .because it help all of us under stand how it was in slave days. how they serviced in the days of slavey and how they got threaded in the past and how you had to go to man camp in the teenage days and you had to due all of these thing like Lerner how to wrestling.they were going to get soled if they got in trouble they road on a ship that it and dark dirty and smelly they wheat to the bathroom were they lied and eat in the same place.this movie has changed my thinking I didn't think that it was that bad being a skate but now as I watch this movie i see how bad it is as a slave . It looked like it is hard to get free and if you had a kids you would have to go and talk them and put then in the air and talk to god because that is how they believe it worked .if you were a slave and you where like Toby / kunt kinta it would of heart to see it happen when he got his foot shops off and he had used lurches for a while and they said that he would not be able to walk again but he said that he will always be able to walk and that he was not going to stop trying .this is a really good movie and if you show it next year I hope they like it the same as me.

ReplyDeleteI think watching this was very fun. I dont think it was a waste of time at all. Also that it was very educational. It lets us know what it was like back then. How they would treat people. Also it is about what we learned. I think it was good for us to watch too for many reasons. Some of the reasons are for us to learn what slavery was like. Also for us to learn how they would go and capture them. To see how they would abuse them and treat slaves like they were animals. Also how they would put them in a space on a ship that they couldn't move for a long time. Then they would sell them so they could own slaves. Also how they couldn't see slaves as people. They would make them work for them for free and give them horrible places to live and not a lot of food or water. If they tried to escape they would be punished very harshly and be brought back. Also to see how upset some people were when president Lincoln was shot and killed how they were scared that they would become slaves again and never be freed. Also how southerners were trying to keep them slaves when Lincoln died. That's why I thought it was good and educational for us to watch it.
I really liked this series of Roots. I liked how we could see how it was kind of like back then with slaves. I learned how they actually treated the slaves if they tried to run away or disobey their masters. I liked Kizzy the best of all characters, because she had to deal with a lot of stuff happening to her and seeing her know she can't trust any whites. I also enjoyed seeing how they got the slaves to America on the ship and how they sold them. It was nice to see the point of view from the slaves lives for once. I always heard how the whites just needed workers and they didn't want to pay them and stuff like that on the whites point of view. I got to see the unfairness of the whites getting all what they wanted and the slaves getting treated like trash. The sixth graders would definitely like this series next year when they are seventh graders. They would like just as much as I did. I really didn't like however how we couldn't see the series everyday, because after a couple of weeks seeing episode five I didn't remember what happened to keep up with episode six. Other wise I thought there were no bad opinions from me with this series. I really did enjoy watching this amazing series, Roots.
ReplyDeleteEpisode 6
ReplyDeleteThis movie has definitely been worth my time. It is a great replication from back then. It is the best history movie I have ever seen. The way that it captures what it was like before we were ever born is incredible. If you want to see a good movie about the time when slavery was still allowed, this is the movie to see. The way that they go from generation to generation is amazing. The first part of it, when Kunta Kinta was still a boy is a good relation if you want to see what the African people were/are like. When they have to go on the ship, it shows what it was like in real detail. Every little thing that you could imagine, it is there. The bidding is there. The doctors office is there. They even talk about Lincoln. Even the owners opinion is there, which lots of history movies only show one side of the story, but this movie shows more than two even. They even show the part where they proclaim that a war has started. I learned a lot from this movie. I never knew that the south surrendered. I had thought that they had always ran out of men who wanted to go and they got severely attacked. Also, I never knew that the slaves would be so upset over Lincoln dying. I knew they would be upset, because everyone was a little upset. But,I didn't realize they would be THIS sad. I also don't know that they still used telegraphs. I know that I should've known that, but its one of those things that even the smartest people don't know. I think that the best part in this movie was when Chicken George comes back, telling everyone that he is a free man now. It helped me to understand that you could still buy your way out of slavery. However, there is a best part and a favorite part. My favorite part is when the Fiddler tries to teach Kunta Kinta his new name. He keeps refusing to accept his new name, Toby. But, I do not think that it was fair how he got whipped for not accepting and saying his name. I was so relived when he finally said it. This movie is a great, educational movie about how slaves became and how they were freed. I don't know about everyone else, but this was a great movie that I would want to watch every year in my history class. Although it was long, it was a very good long movie. Most long movies, I get bored of watching it and leave. But this one, I was all ears and eyes. This movie is a amazing movie that all people should see no matter what age.

Roots showed us a lot about how african Americans were treated and how they got there freedom I think that these episodes where worth it . I like the episodes I learned from them a lot . I learned how the African Americans lived back then and how they were treated. I learned how they got African American over seas and how the caught them and how they bring them back on the ship how they got treated on the ship and how they lived in the ship on bunk beds on top of bunk beds it was dirty and gross on the ships . Then how people auction off the African Americans to people then How people farmed back then and how African Americans were traded off and sold to other people and how family's got broken up and littler kids would go to different plants and how they would get free and at the end and how the war got over then the African American got free and then the African Americans farmed and shared cropped and then how some people still treated them like salves and burned down there farms. Roots had a lot of information in the movies .
I liked Roots. I don't think it was a wast of time. I think the next year seventh grader should watch it. It showed how they got the slaves. How they got bought over to America. It show how they had to get bought. How they get to the place were they will stay. How they got treated. I liked how it showed a life of a family. I liked how was told in the point of view of the slave them self. It had a lot of good things and a lot of not so so good thing .It showed me that they made it with out all the thing we have know. They did all the fieldwork by hand not with big trucks like we have. They did not have car at that time instead they used horse and buggy. The kids did not have I pads to play on but they played outside, and with other kids houses. At the end it showed what the salves did ti get freedom. Even though it took many years to get that freedom they got it. I liked roots they should watch it next year and its not a wast of time. I think they will watch it. I learned alot from roots and they will too.
ReplyDeleteYes I think that this was a good thing for us to watch because it was fun. The seventh graders nexth year should watch it because you actually learn stuff from it, it isn't just a movie for fun. This showed us what it was like when there was slavery. These videos also show you way more about slavery than books can tell you, I think that you can never know what slavery was like unless you watch these videos because even books can't describe how horrible it was. These videos show just how desperate slaves were, and how bad it was when the whites would just take a black that they found no matter if they had a family or not. I think that the seventh graders next year would like to watch these videos and they would say the same as most of the people that are saying that these videos should be shown every year. This is my opinion and why I want these videos to be shown every year.

I LOVE the movie roots. It was so educational and useful. It was so worth my time because I learned how they lived and how they acted. I think you should keep playing this movie. I bet that they would all like it. Some parts were disturbing but that was what they did. Before I watched this movie I never thought It was this bad of what they did. It is so said of what they did. I also really liked have your own character and pretending you were them. You could really put yourself in there shoes and understand them better. If I could watch this movie again I would watch it in a heart beat. It really teaches you there culture and how they lived and survived. The part that was the worst was when they were on the boat coming to America. How they had to lie there chained up. Another part that was sad is when Kunta Kinte got taken. His family must have been heartbroken. If anyone hasn't seen Roots they need to. It is such a great movie. They showed that some slaves got treated differently. I think the strongest slave in this movie was Kizzy. She had to go through so much and she got through it. If I was there back then I don't know how I could do that. Losing a family member would make me so sad. I think they next year seventh grades will learn a lot and enjoy it also. I bet they will get something out of it just like we did this year. That's why I think you should keep playing the movie.
I thought this movie Roots was a good movie because it taught us a lot about life long ago, before we were born. I thought that this movie was not a waste of time. It is a good source for learning about the times before us, and how much they suffered and lived through the hard times with family and working in the war. I do not think this movie is too long because we watched it in periods of time, and we blogged about our characters that we got assigned so it wasn't a long movie at all to me. Maybe this movie Roots was long to some other people but not to me. Roots helped me learn how bad the slavery was and how long the wars took. It was worth the time it took to watch this movie and the time it took to watch it. I think that you should have the 7th graders watch this next year, so they can learn what I learned from watching this awesome but sad movie about slavery. Roots taught me more than I thought I would ever know about slavery. It shows me how freedom started(when the war ended).
ReplyDeleteI really loved watching roots. I think you had a wonderful idea to do the blog. I enjoyed looking what people wrote. I think it was way better watching a story that just reading about it. It gave me a "clear as mud" under standing. It was good learning how everything happened, and what happened. I loved it how it wasn't just based on one person. Each person had a hope together free. I thought some of the parts were a little much like whipping and unclothed people. My favorite part was when they were on the ship. I remember reading about it, and it was good learning what they thought and felt. It was scary to think that back then white treated blacks like that. It was cool hearing and watching what they did when the present died. I think that you should show I next year. This is a very good movie on what happened. I think that it is very sad but it's what happens. Also they will under stand more how hard it was for the blacks. I also think it should be a chose to do a project if kids don't want to. It cool to think that the blacks keep hope and they made it. Also that Kunta Kinta was in mind through the story. I think it was good that you picked our charters. It was fun writing about it. Also I think that the kids have to be mature for it.

I liked the roots it showed me how the slaves lived. It did us good to show us what happens to them. How they lived was not good at all. It was pretty fun to. This should be happening for a lot longer. It would not teach them how they learned and and how they got hear. They would not learn how what they did after the were free. Monday should know anything about them. What there life was like on the ship. They would not know how they were treated. How there ate where they lived how they lived would all be questions to them. But if they watch this they would not have all those questions they would not have any more. If you stopped doing it they might not learn as much as we did. They would not know what happens after Lincoln died. Like I learn a lot like that a lot of people sold there land. And slaves had knew names when they came to be a slave. I even learn about the night riders. How they went all around and wrecked all the farms.

Yes. I think that this movie was very educational. It showed me how badly the whites treated the blacks. It showed me how much the south hated the blacks and how horrible they were. It showed me how brave the blacks were and how much they wanted to be free. This movie is probably one of the most educational about slavery. I think this was a great choice. I liked that it went from Kunta Kinte to his daughter to her son to his two sons. It's cool that the laws and historic times change time after time.
Yes I thought that watching ROOTS was very helpful. I thought it was very interesting. I also thought it was very educational. I learned a lot about slavery in this movie. I learned that the whites were really mean to the blacks back then. I learned how much different lives were between the men, women, and children. I thought it was really sad when they sold the little children. I thought it was interesting when they capture the slaves how cruelly they treated the slaves when they were on the ship going to America. I also never noticed that some slave owners were way worse than others. I think I personally wouldn’t have been that bad a slave owner; I would try to be nicer. I know it would have been harder back then but I would try. I thought it was weird when they all started crying over Lincoln but I knew that they thought they were going to get pulled back into slavery. It was also weird when all of a sudden people came up on horses and threw torches and burned down the building and killed those blacks. I also didn’t know that the people riding the horses were called night riders. I didn’t quite understand some of the stuff in the movie though. Like, why they wanted to let Kunte Kinte die where he was. I also didn’t understand who the old lady was when they were celebrating. It was also hard to understand them sometimes when they spoke throughout the whole movie. I didn’t understand what they were talking about in the room when they were fighting about the whites. Overall I think that this was the best project that I have done in school.

ReplyDeleteI think it was worth our time. With this we had sight and sounds. With a book you could only read but with this there is more ways you could learn. It is also easier to see the culture of the people back then. There was more stuff in there that in a book could be about that time and showed how they treated the others. It shows how they acted when the war was over like the whites were very sad because they did not have enough of money to keep the blacks and the blacks are happy because they are free even though they don't have money.
It is better to observe it because it is easier that reading the whole book. The movie also provides with more details about 1700's, 1800's.
This movie was inspirational. It taught me about a very important time in our history. First, in the beginning, it taught me how the Africans lived, and how we "captured" them. It was so cruel! Then, we learned how they treated them on the ship, how they were kept chained up, and would throw up, and die. We also saw how they would sell them, and what the average price was for a slave. After that, we saw how they would get around, by horse and carriage, or wagon. Then, we saw what the life of a slave was, and the punishment for running away (getting whipped). Next, we saw Kunta Kinte when he was older, and when he got married. We saw how a white would let a black down. Also, how some masters would rape the ladies, until they had babies. Then, we saw what would happen if there was a cock fight, and the one person bid to much, then they would probably give one of their slaves away, even if they had a family. Also, we saw what happened when they slaves became free, and he devastating it was to them when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. This movie was so educational, and fun to watch. Also, it took up time out of social, but it was time well used. I hope you will show this to the students next year, except show it in a shorter time period. Don't stretch it out so much. It would be better if you put aside a certain time that you will watch it continuously. I really enjoyed watching this movie.

Yes this was good because it helps you learn about what happened back when there was slaves. I think that you should watch this next year. It shows you what the blacks went throw when they were on the ship to when they become free and can do what they won't. It shows how they catch the the blacks in Africa. It shows what happened after the they were free and how there were night riders that were going around on a rampage. It also makes lest home woke for this class during the time that we are watching the movie. If you don't like this movie you are missing out on it and you should. This movie is grate for learning what happened in the past and you need to know what happened int the past. It is worth spending all the time on this move because you get a lot out of it. It is part of history and every one should know what happened and it is easer to lean it this way. Some parts are happy and some are series and that is a good thing. You should watch every year so that all to come know it. How Toby came from Africa and wonted to be free and how he rans away and how his foot gets chopped off because he ran away to much. How he has a kid named Kizzy and they get separated and then how she has a kid and how he get free. It go on and on. So yes you souls watch it next year.

I think you should show the 7th graders next year Roots. It really showed me what it was like for the slaves. How they were treated and how they lived. It was very educational, but it was also good. I liked how we had to write the blogs on the characters, it really helped to understand what they had to go through. I now know more on how slavery was back then, and how bad it was. I didn't know it was that bad. The only thing I didn't like was there was so much kissing, but I don't think that should stop you from showing the video next year. I liked how it showed how they got the slaves. I liked that they had it from the slaves perspective and the whites perspective. I liked that it also showed how they reacted when they were told they were free and then when Lincoln was killed. I felt like that was the best movie I had ever watched in school for educational proposes. I think the 7th graders will really appreciate you showing them Roots.

ReplyDeleteI thought this was a great movie. Before I watched this I had no idea that slavery even existed. It showed me how horrible it was for the slaves. Watching them be transported in the ship was really sad to see. Watching as the years went by and how they we're bought and sold gives me a better understanding of what our world was like then.
I think you should keep showing this movie in class because it is a good teaching tool for kids to learn about slavery.
Courtney sutton hour 2
ReplyDeleteI think that next years kids should wach this because they can learn how to make friends even though they don't think that they want to be friends with the anyone that are blacks. They could learn that they can write about how the characters feel in this movie and they could try to relate to that character. I thought that this movie was important to me because I found out how the blacks were treated. They weren't treated very good at all. The whites should treat the blacks the way they want to be treated. I can't even believe how they treated the blacks like animals. They also should watch it because it teaches them about how bad slavery was and they should think how great our world is today.they should also do the blog because it really helps you know that you understand the movie. I would hate to be a slave. This movie was the best history movie I ever saw.

I think that roots is very good and that Mr. Jepma shows it next year too. It teaches us about how the slaves were treated. They were take in from their tribes. Then just shipped away like animals. Then sold to people that needed them to work on there farms, and if they did something wrong or tried to run away the owners would hurt them very bad or sell them. It is very interesting to watch, because they take so many real facts. It also shows just how bad they were treated. They were treated like animals just because they have different colored skin.
I think that it's an good movie and it very educational at the same time. I think it's an educational movie because it really shows how they were treated. It also really shows what we learn in the book, but way better! It gives us better look at things for what really happened to the slaves. It gives us a better look on what the slaves felt, and all the drama and the weddings and the movie showed us. It also shows us what happened during all the different generations and how things changed. I think they should watch it again next year. It's a very good and educational at the same time.

I think that the roots movie was great use of time. I think we all learned a lot about how the colored skin was treated very unfairly, abused, beaten. That they were forced to farm and work dawn to dusk. How are country was different back then. I also think that the next years class would learn a lot from it. They also would enjoy getting to watch roots. I think though that you should use a different way of the characters like maybe giving speeches or doing plays! Instead of doing the two hundred and fifty word blogs. Doing the blogs and then go through the trouble of putting them on the website, is kind of a pain. So I think I'm so-so about watching the movie but I'm thumbs down on he blog.
( it's a cool web site though)
I think that this is a good movie to watch in school. I think you should continue to play it next year. It teaches what it is really like to be a slave.I learned that Toby would act in the movie, like in the beginning he would run away. I liked the movie very much, because I learned a lot that why you should show this next year.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good movie and it is a good movie. because it lets us now how the native Americans serviced in the slave years.how hard they had to work and if they toyed to run away they would have to get there privets cut off or there foot so they could not run away anymore and it was a good movie and I think you should show this movie next year .because it help all of us under stand how it was in slave days. how they serviced in the days of slavey and how they got threaded in the past and how you had to go to man camp in the teenage days and you had to due all of these thing like Lerner how to wrestling.they were going to get soled if they got in trouble they road on a ship that it and dark dirty and smelly they wheat to the bathroom were they lied and eat in the same place.this movie has changed my thinking I didn't think that it was that bad being a skate but now as I watch this movie i see how bad it is as a slave .
ReplyDeleteOk I really loved this movie series. I think it was an interesting way to show the life of the slaves. The men, women, girls, and boys slaves were all expressed through this movie. Which was a really fun way to learn! I did think that it was a little brutal, but was up front and showed what truly happened back then in the slave years. I really like the beginning with the life of Kunta Kenta and his awesome story of taking care of his sheep and him becoming a man and just everything in his life. Oh yeah I almost forgot you should keep this for next year, because I know the other kids will for sure love these movies, or show things. You should seriously keep this series. This is one of my favorite classes, for sure! Thanks for letting us watch and learn through these movies, they were a real pleasure. Through these things though I never did get to do the people I wanted to write about. The people I wanted to write about we're Kunta Kenta and Chicken Joe. It's ok though I just thought what a great time. Ok just for sure do it next year, and I now that I said it a few times but I really want you to do it next year, because it just my FAVORITE thing in this class so far. I also really hope your are teacher next year because your Awesome! Thanks for all the time and money you put in!
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a very good series. It was very educational and was fun to watch. I think that the people that made the movie showed the way of the lives of people in Africa and slaves in America. I think that people should watch it next year because it is educational and very fun to watch. I really liked how they showed how hard and horrible it was for slaves. I thought it was also cool when they showed life in Africa.
ReplyDeleteI think the seventh graders should watch this next year. Ths movie is really good, and educational to learn about the slaves. It also might make them a bit more mature, too, since there are certain scenes. It also makes me wonder even more about how my kind treated the blacks back then. I am glad for Abe Lincoln, and I'm glad everybody is free. Now, looking around, there are African Americans that re sports heroes, war heroes, and presidents. It's so good that there still isn't slavery. I'm glad that everybody in America is Free!

I think that roots is a good movie to watch in seventh grade. Next year you definitely should have them watch it. It is a good series to watch if you want to know more about slavery. It shows exactly how it would have been, and it makes you view slavery way differently. I learned so much from this series, like how hard they really worked, how they suffered horribly if they did something wrong, and just how their daily lives were. I also learned about how the whites were really cruel to the slaves. It shows all different views on slavery, and it is like a normal book lesson but in a movie! I also didn't like some parts of it... I hated watching people die.... For some people that isn't that big of a deal but it was kind of harsh..... And also some of it was confusing at times, but once you explained it, it was a little better. In episode 6, it was confusing because we haven't watched roots in a while so if you watch this next year... I recommend that you don't take a big break in between the shows. I also didn't like that Toby died and then it was about Kizzy. Then Kizzy died and it was about chicken George. Then chicken George went away somewhere and it's about his children and wife. I would have liked it more if it was all about Toby/Kunta kinte and his wife not about all of his descendants. That got really confusing because they all looked kind of the same and they never really said there names so it was hard to figure out who we had to blog about. This movie was worth the time and I would watch it again!!!

I think this series is very interesting. It should be shown to the seventh graders next year. It tells you about how different things were back then. The blacks would get threaded so very different because they were salvages and because they were back. I was very unfair back then. The slaves had to do every thing. The thing that made me me have the most expression on the movie was the whipping. I think it was to harsh. If the slaves do one thing wrong and it was a little thing they would get punished for it. They had to work so much harder then we do now. I also do think that next year we should watch it or this years eighth graders should watch it. It is a little violent and harsh but it's still a good movie. I like how sometimes they stand up for themselves. They had freedom but they lost it because they didn't work hard enough. Like chicken George had a chance for freedom if he won a chicken fight but he lost so he never got to go to a better work place that would pay him. I think this movie is a good movie because it tells you alot about back then and that's good if your wondering what it was like back then. It's movie has alot of information about every person so if you and try to write about someone in it you will get a lot of information. I just think that back then they should've had a little more freedom. They try and get back at the whites and at first it doesn't work, they try harder and they just wanted the whites to know how the slaves felt. Over all this is a very great movie.

ReplyDeleteThe theme of the movie is about how horrible slavery was back then. I think that this was a good series to watch. The reason why is, because we got to learn about how the blacks/whites lived in the past. How they got treated as slaves, what they acted like, what they did to try to run away. What happened if they caught them. The whites, were mean, terrible, horrible people back then! I think it explains a lot how the way slaves went through the civil war and how they were treated before that. I think it was a really great thing to watch and learn how it was started and how long it took for them to be set free.In the beginning of the series it stared out slow, and boring, there was nothing going on at all! Finally something happened! The whites were there, to take some of the Africans to America, the trip took 3-5 months! Then in the middle of the story, Toby tried to run away! But his owner hunted, and tracked him down! He tried against! But this time he cut off his foot so he couldn't any more! Afterward in the end, one of the wars were going on between the south, and the north for them to free slavery! The south kept pushing! Finally the south won! One of the blacks came running back saying "They got a telegraph phone call! Saying that the South won! We are now free from slavery!" They were all excited! But yeah I do think that the sixth graders should watch this its a very educational series of a movie, it teaches them. But it depends on how good they are with movies, with violence in it. This was one of the best movies we have watched all year long! They should be able to watch this next year for a project like we were able to do! But one of the bad things were was that it took forever to watch just one part of the six series movie! But it was also hard to watch, when we had to do our packets too when we would try to watch them the same week, then we would have our tests on Friday, and then we would have to do a journal about the movie! So it mad it harder with the packet, and the journal the same week. You should watch it next year, and you also shouldn't. The reason why is, because it should be a reward if they are good, for a while, and if they aren't then don't give it too them. But this movie was one of the most interesting movies, I have seen in a long time so far.

This show was so cool. I wish I will be here next year in your class. To watch and always watch this show. I love it so much I had asked my mom if I can have the series but she keeps saying she does not like the show at all and won't give in to me. I like it scares it teaches you about history and I love history it like my favorite subject. I would love if they came out with more episodes of Roots. I just wish they did. This last episode it so amazing we are only thirdly minuets into the show! This is gonna be awesome. Can't wait for the grade next year to see it. They will probably like it more than me. Well this show is awesome and I just want to tell ya'll that it is a great show and I enjoy it and I really hope you do as much as I do. So to tell everyone this is a great movie and I would recommend it to everyone in this school. Well that was an awesome ending I love the movie and show it again next year!

I think the Roots series was a good idea to watch. Everyone really liked it when we watched it. It was very interesting too. I feel like every time we watched it I would have walked out of the class room with more information about the slavery times. It's so entertaining too. It also can help with our typing and writing skills. I really like watching it too, because I like learning about this kind of history. It is also fun to read what other people have to say about their characters on the Roots blog website. I really liked it when we wrote about the characters, because it made me feel part of the whole story. I think it is worth watching again. It is very educational, because we stop and talk about words we don't know and I really liked that about watching it too. Also It is worth spending all that time watching the Roots series, because its very easy to understand. What I mean by understand is its from different people's point of view like the African American's point and the Caucasian's point. I think just about everyone in my grade really liked it, so the kids for next year will probably like it too. It also teaches how the lives of people were and how so many Africans were treated. It also shows us how some of the African Americans were treated in ways our teacher or a text book could never explain. The Roots series explains how people got took away from their homes and brought to America , when our textbook never really explain how they got captured and how they got taken away form Africa. It also showed us how they became free. The Roots Series taught me much more about the Klu Kulx Klan before I didn't really know anything about them and now I do because they showed us what they did and it talked about why they did it. What I thought was really cool was that the Roots Series went from Kunta Kinta all the way down to Alex Haley who actually wrote the Roots books. He remembered all the stories his family passed down from the slavery times to when his family became free. Also the kids for next year will like how it's practically true. It was very awesome I'm so glad we watched it!

ReplyDeleteI think that this was a great movie to watch. It is very educational about how slavery was back then, and how it was such a terrible thing to do to people. My favorite part of this movie was when Kizzy was all grown up and she went to go see Missy Ann. They were inside of her house and Missy Ann told her to read a section from the Bible. She started reading and then Missy Ann's father came in the room, seeing Kizzy reading. That was a good part. Anyway, It also showed how African Americans suffered and thrived thought their long lives. I also thought that this showed us how the Whites lived back then also. It showed that some were very rich, and how they treated their community, family, and work. It is unbelievable how much the world has changed from now, to then. Now, we have a lot more freedom and respect then what we did before. It was interesting how Toby's family kept on regenerating in the years to come. I also saw in the movie that Toby had a great affect on his family. He had told them that he is a Inca warrior and that his Grandfather and father are very big warriors. That fight and warrior is in all of their blood, and will be forever. This was a very good movie and I recommend that the seventh graders next year should watch it.

ReplyDeleteI think this movie was great. It showed a real perspective of what a real slave feels like. It shows us all the stuff and doesn't hold back.i feel like it had a real purpose to watch it. Some of it was very visual but still had purpose. I think before we watch all the episodes we should learn a little more about them. I personally liked how the cock fighting took place. The time went so quickly when I was watching this there were so many generations or people. It also showed major things that happened not only to slaves but to everyone. As I was watching this movie it stunned me what they believed back then. They thought that by your skin color that judged how smart you were. There are so many things that are changed through out the episodes. I feel like this is a real good learning experience for all students. I think you should show them bits and clips or the movie so then if there parents say it is ok they might not think it is as graphic as it really is. If you show them bits and clips if they think it might not be good then they can say they don't want to watch it. Even though I think it is a great movie. Overall I think the episodes were well thought out and very informal. The only advice I have is to tell us more about the generations like who they are and who are there parents and kids. Also explain the slave owners a little more and why there are new one being replaced. That is everything I have to saw the movie was great
I personally think that it WAS a good idea to watch it in class. I mean, why not? There's no reason not to show it in History, because Roots is all about our history and past. It gives us a deeper understanding and knowledge of what happened, and it showed a good few generations of it. I mean, you gave us the option to not watch it if we didn't think it was appropriate, and so it was fine. I mean, yeah, there was a few cuss words here and there, but that's part of life. We hear it anyways, and we are mature enough to hear a few. There was a little but of cleavage, but there's a remote and mute button for that. This story is real, and it puts us in the places of many other people and we get to see how they saw life, how they dealt with it. Some stuff is disturbing, but we need to know how our past was and take part in influencing good instead of bad, and if we don't know what the bad is, then we can't. People watch horror movies all the time, this is sort of same thing. Some disturbing movie. But, it's reality. It's life. It's real, and we have to accept it so we might as well learn the past while we can. We can't change the past, so if we watch movies on how it was we can change the future and make it better than in Roots. Well, it already is. But I think it's a good idea. I learned a lot about what happened, I really understood it. Now I have a lot of knowledge about our past. This movie was just an educational source about our past but this story is based on a real story, and now we know how it really was. It was great learning about how slavery was, really getting the depth of it. It gave us the perspective of slaves lives, feeling there side for it, as we were in their shoes. I think this was an okay movie to be watching in class.

ReplyDeleteI liked roots, I thought it was very educational. It shows what happened back then. It explains slavery. It helped me understand how bad conditions were back then. It also helped me understand that slavery is truly horrid. Roots taught me a lot about the history of slavery. Mostly what they did. And explained that's it's horrid. It taught us about some of the trips, and the cruel people out there. It taught us about how the blacks reacted when they found out eh we're free. They didn't know where to go! Many white men were very mad, they didn't know what to do either. But then there were more men, who didn't care. They did, but they didn't talk crap about them. They all knew they were free. These men that didn't like the blacks still talked crap about them. They were very cruel still. Call them bad names. Saying mean things about them, they didn't even do anything wrong! It taught us that Lincoln died from a white man shooting him in the back of the head, they probably think it has to do with the slavery. They also did this horrid thing where the mean people that don't agree with the blacks being equal do this thing of share cropping but it makes the blacks owe more debt than they could ever repay. The mean men also lit fire to the blacks homes and the nice whites couldn't do anything about it! They had no right for it. Some of The blacks now have nowhere to live. The blacks want to get even, but not as a fight. They want to put something special on the horse's hooves. They are scared to tell the police u dee the white mans law, but what more can they do? They're afraid to be shot. But the only people that could do that are rebels. And they won't do that around the sinister person. They check with the police and the police says he will get after them. Roots is a very educational movie.

In my opinion, it was beneficial to watch Roots. It was a great way to show us rather than tell us about African Americans and how they were treated. It showed us that during those years there was not fairness, there was not equality, and there was not a respect for all men. I think it was a great way to show us how far people have come regarding the issues of race and that we should appreciate the society we are growing up in now. Roots showed how important families and traditions are and no matter what your color is, you are somebody's family. I really enjoyed watching the characters and how they grew and how they aged over the years. I think it is important to learn about our history and watching Roots showed us how far our nation has come since the days it was legal and normal to own slaves. I am glad I had the opportunity to watch Roots so I could have a better appreciation of our history.

I thought this was a amazing movie. I liked it because it went back in history and, we were able to see what actually happened instead of reading it. I thought it was also a good learning skill and was beneficial to us in learning about slavery. There was some harsh things I did not like. Like when slaves would get punished I thought it was sad that it actually happened like that back then. I did learn a lot like how the slave hunters kept searching till they found the slave, how slaves lived, in general how cruel some people were. I found the movie interesting it was like they did not keep one detail out and it all seemed so realistic. I really thought the movie was one of the most educational movies I watched at school about slavery. I do think the eight graders should watch this movie I think they would really enjoy it. I think they would like the Roots just as much as we did, because it was educational but like a fun school assignment.
I think this was a great series and it was worth my time. Every bit of it. I had a lovely time doing this. Surprisingly I learned something new by watching this. I learned about cock fighting. I learned about how some masters after a time the let there slaves go free. It was really informative and interesting. I really thought it was great. Now I saw how the confederacy felt about the war. I saw how they felt about losing the war. Sometimes it was hard to do the blog because some of the parts were sort and not to informative for me. So I didn't have a lot of words to work with. Some of the parts were long so it was better to do. So I had a lot of words. I also like to take a break from typing and watch a little bit and start typing again. Some of the people in this series were big jerks and others were really nice people. It was funny in some parts. So I think that Mr. Jepma should do this for the kids in sixth grade because I really enjoyed watching this.

I think it's a great idea for you to show roots next year. Roots shows us all of the imperfections in our society in the past. It really teaches us that everyone should be treated equally. It is also kind of offensive though. I believe that the pros outweigh the cons. Roots was a great movie to show. It has a great story and teaches kids to believe in there heritage. It also shows people to never give up on what you believe in. It shows kids how bad all of the blacks were treated back then. It is very sick. It showed me that we should never let our world come to such a close minded habit. I think that roots should be shown for years to come.

ReplyDeleteYes it is because it helps you learn a lot of things about the slaves and it gives you time to relax and do cool homework and have a good time about watching the movie. It helps you learn about the people back then to. You learn about how they try to run away and get free. You learn how they got free. You see what the slaves do for being a slave. The get to be free then the white wrecks there houses. It helps you learn a lot about what happened back then. They have to get treated like slaves again. This is a good way to learn because you have to do homework and work real hard on it to get points. It is also a fun way to learn because you get to watch a Kool movie for it and learn cool things about the past. You can sit and do homework while you are watching the movie that's why I like to do this and you get to watch a movie on it. They got free then he try's to get them arrested and he gets whipped. Learn a lot about what happened with the blacks back then.

ReplyDeleteI think that watching Roots was a good thing to watch. I learned more about slavery by watching this than ever reading about it. I think that people learn something better if they see it rather than read it/hear about it. Before watching Roots I didn't know that most of the slaves were from a specific part of Africa. I also didn't know that there were white people in the woods waiting for a black person to come by than catch them. I learned that most of the Africans on the ship died. I also didn't know how close and cramped they were on the lower deck of the ship, and what the white men did to the African women. I knew before that slaves got whipped, but watching the slaves in Roots get whipped and hearing the whip hit them really made me think how much that must have hurt. This is what I learned about slavery from Roots. I really think that you should keep showing Roots. But if you do keep showing Roots you should show them episode after episode (have like a unit on Roots) because when we had breaks in between the episodes I kind of forgot some of the stuff that had happend.
I think roots was a very outstanding movie I learned so much I did not no before about slavery like how they would brand them. I also thought that it is cool how they tell slavery in a different perspective and show more things than oral movies about slavery . I always think what if that was us and we would have been in slavery we would be called cruel words and thought of as animals we would be separated from our family and all because we are a different color. It is a very confusing concept that makes us look stupid for judging people on their color, crazy huh? What if this was banned from our school like Huckleberry Finn is banned from a lot of other schools and it is all because of the words they say in them. It is a dumb idea to ban things like Roots because if we didn't know what they said or did how would we know anything about slavery?

ReplyDeleteRoots was an awesome movie. I think the theme was slave trade and freedom because there have been multiple times where the slaves were traded. First off Kunta Kinte was taken from Africa. Then there's his own daughter who got sold because she broke the law. Then her son, Chicken George Moore, became a free man but his wife and two sons were sold. That was the last of that family being sold. I thought freedom too because throughout this whole movie the African American slaves are trying and wishing to become free. Roots was important to me. It gave me another look at what things were like back then. I do think next years seventh grade class should watch this movie. Mostly so they have this amazing experience that our class had, but also because Roots was very educational. Like it did to me, they could get another look on how it actually was back then. Sometimes when kids read things they will get it but not as well as watching it on a movie or in person. This movie might come to them easier and they now it's a true story. I think you should definitely show these episodes to the next years seventh graders.

I think that watching this movie was a very educational movie to watch. It taught the class about how the slaves were treated back then. This movie was a profitable movie to watch for our learning. I think that you should continue to play Roots for the sixth graders next year, and so on. This movie taught us about how much impact the war had on the slaves and the whites. It informed us about the struggles that the slaves had; how they were treated, how they worked, the low pay that they got, and the working conditions. We were even able to learn about the Ku Klux Klan and how they destroyed the land of the whites and scared the blacks after the blacks got free. This movie taught me a lot about the slave time and it helped me understand it more. Since this movie was based on true events, it made it more interesting. I really liked watching this movie, and I think it would be a great experience for other kids in the future to be able to watch it. It was a great movie. The theme had a very good impact on me. It taught me so much, and I feel like every seventh grader should be able to experience this learning.
I think that you should show this to other classes is years to come. I think this because it makes learning
ReplyDeleteAbout slavery really fun. Also it puts a very good story line with it. I also liked how mush detail it had in the movie and that the dude Alex Haley took all the time to look up this stuff and make a book and a movie about it. I think that it is good that you have us do the blogs because then we are watching it we actully have to pay attention so that we can write about. That makes us take In the information. That is what I think about this movie
I thought the the roots epesoids were really good. They showed me what it was like to be black back in the early 1800. I would never want to be a slave or be someone who has to whip a slave. I think it should be shown next year because it has a vary good veew of what it was like. What it would like to be black and how white men took slaves. Also it showed how they used to live and showed how blacks were treated. I shows what they did to pick a good slave I learned a lot in this movie that's why you should show this movie in the next couple years
ReplyDeleteI thought that the roots series was good because it shows us how they lived back then. I think you should show it next year so other students can learn how they lived. My favorite character was kunta kenta. I liked when they askaped the plantashone. I think that you should show this educational movie with them so they can learn the black history.
