Synopsis of Episode 3:
In this episode of Roots, Toby (Kunta Kinte) goes through a lot:
He runs away from his owner in order to try to find Fanta, the girl he knew from Africa. He finds her, but learns that she does not share his dream of running away together. Although she wants to be free, she wants to stay safe even more and refuses to run away with him. While they are arguing, Toby is discovered by slave-catchers who chase him down and capture him. The slave-catchers tie Toby up and cut off part of one of his feet to keep him from running away again.
Toby’s wound gets infected and he spends most of a month unconscious. He is nursed back to health by a slave named Belle. When he wakes up, he finds that he, Fiddler and a couple of other slaves from his master’s plantation have been sold. He now belongs to Dr. Reynolds, the brother of his first master.
He feels very sorry for himself and wants to give up, but Belle taunts him until he gets angry enough to get out of bed and start living again.
Several years pass. Toby eventually becomes Dr. Reynolds’ driver and marries Belle. His life gets better, but he never gives up on his dream of freedom. On one of his trips with the Doctor, Toby meets another African slave who has a plan to run away. He gives Toby a signal to listen for – a particular rhythm on a drum. When he hears the drum, Toby is supposed to run away with the Drummer.
Belle and Toby have a baby girl named Kizzy. At about the same time, Fiddler dies. It is a very emotional time for Toby.
A few weeks after Kizzy is born, Toby takes her out into the night to officially give her her name, just like his father did for him back in Africa. While he is holding her up to the stars, he hears the Drummer calling him to run away.
He returns to Belle and tells her that the plantation where they live will never be a home to him, but that he loves her and Kizzy too much to run away from them. He decides to stay and pass on his dream of freedom to his daughter.

I was going about my regular chores. I was asked to have some water. I refused she insisted but I still didn't. They were talking about selling me but I plead that i would be a good nigger. I so badly wanted to stay. I would risk losing a nice master. Later that day I was laying in my cot praying to ala when I was interrupted by fiddler. I didn't stop praying because that would be disrespectful. Eventually he barged in. He told me to stop for I would get beaten if I was caught by a white. After a while I showed him my feathers for good luck. I told him I will run away. He got mad and said I can't because I will lose his privlages for him again. I did it anyways and snuck on a wagon and got to a plantation. I was hiding in th chicken coop when fiddler came upon me he told me to run to the barn. I found fanta their. We united. I told her I need o be with her. Then in the morning was my time to run I told her to come with me. I tried to tell her that I could genus to the north. We got so angry that we didn't keep our voices down. I was then discovered and took off in a dead sprint. They then finally caught me. My run was over again.

ReplyDeleteI am picking up leaves. This girl came up to me and asked if wanted to take a drink. I said no. I have to load three wagons. I might have been sold.I was just praying when he came in. I want to be free. I just good bye to Fittler. I am getting ready to be free. I step out of my room then I run. I see Amas so I hide. I get in to the wagon. I am on my way to be free. I have found another person. I found Fanta. She wants to be called Maggie. I am Toby. The white men don't give us anything. I cant say much longer. We can make it.You stay a slave. They as her who was in there. So i ran as fast as i could. I got cought in a net. I am about to get my foot chopped off. I am a leaving man. How come? Tell me more. I can find a way to run. I just lay here to die. I don't need boats. I don't need those boats because I am not going to walk. I just fell face first, when trying to get up from the bed. My name is Knute Knita.

ReplyDeleteI am watching the doctor and Belle take care of the nigga. His name is Toby. The doctor tells me that if the boy dies while he is gone, I must bury him quick. I understand that. I do not want to. He goes outside and I follow him. Fiddler is waiting outside. He says he wants to see Toby. Tells him that they were good friends. Janelle up and the doctor asks me what she is good for. I tell him not for the farm hands. I say that she is only good for breeding. He agrees with me. I know that Janelle has known Toby. I can see it in her eyes. Belle goes back to taking care of Toby. I don't know what it is with him. I heard this is his second time running away. Doctor says that he doesn't approve of what those men did. Neither do I. I think it's unfair and that they should have just killed him or left him alone and bring him back. He seems so daring. I think that he came from Africa. As the doctor is talking with the fiddler, I go off into thinking about this. All of it seems so silly, that this man would die. He seems so much stronger than what everyone else thinks. I believe he is going to make it, with the crutches and all.
I am Kunta Kinte I am an African American slave who works for Mr. Renalds. I am working in the field when a woman walks up to me and gives me water. I started working again. A man tells me to load a crate onto a wagon. Then he calls me dumb but strong, and tells me to keep loading. I loaded some more hay, and climbed out of the wagon. Mr. Renalds tells me that I now work for a man standing next to me. I beg to not leave. I walk away from them and see Fiddler. Fiddler knocks on my door while I am lying down, he comes in and taps me. We joke around a bit, and talk for a bit more. I show him a charm that makes me strong and gives me luck. Fiddler asks me why I needed that charm. We start talking about the law. Fiddler gets called outside. We hug goodbye, and he leaves. I put my charm on my arm. The next day I wake up to dancing leaving and music. I then go outside and run away from the farm. I listen to a conversation between two men, when the men leave I get in one man's cart and got rode off. I poke my head out of the tarp, run over to a tree and sit down. I was in the corner of a chicken coop when a old man found me, he told me to go to the barn. Fanta walks into the barn at morning and we start talking. I ask "what they do to you?" And she responded "everything." We talk bout our names. We start talking about the white men, then we kiss. We start talking again. I plead that I want her and that I need her. Then we start kissing again. We talk about what the white do for us and what they give us. I say that we should go out of the white area. Fanta yelled at me that her name is Maggie. We start fighting bout running away or not. I run away from the area as the white men chase me. I run through the woods and start throwing rocks. I get trapped by a net. They cut off my toes, and I yell. I start yelling Fanta in my sleep. I start yelling, then Fiddler comes inside my cabin and says "Ha! You alive!" We talk abut why they didn't just kill me. Bell comes inside and joins in on our conversation. He'll leaves and now I want to just lay down and die. Fiddler gives me crutches. I wake up to Bell coming inside, and we start talking. I say that I won't walk again. I try standing up, but fall over. I start moving with the crutches. I say that I'm going to learn to run. Four years later I walk into my shack, when Jehovah is standing in my room. We start talking, then we started mating. While I'm putting on my shirt a man walks in and takes Jehovah back to her cabin. I walk outside with a box in my hands, then a woman talks to me about last night.

Mr. Reynolds asked me to leave! This isn't fair it's not my fault he made a fool of Mr. Reynolds. Now I have to get off his property. I found Toby! Now Mr. Reynolds might take me back. I chased him on my horse wherever he went, i followed him. As he ran throughout the woods I followed him. I threw a net on Toby and captured him. He is going to get punished very badly. I proposed him a choice, he could get his toes chopped off, or his privates. He didn't speak and so I cut off his toes with my axe. He deserves it, he ran off , and ruined my life. I believe it was a small punishment, for what he should have gotten. Toby was quiet lucky. I doubt Mr. Reynolds will let me come back, I want to so bad. I had it pretty good there, now I live in the wilderness . I mean really in Mr. Reynolds place I watched over things, and got a horse. Now I have nothing . I hope he dies, after what he did, I think he should have gotten killed right then and there . I never want to see his face again. At least I cut his foot off, my anger was reveled with my axe . I really regret not killing him. I would like to kill Mr. Reynolds, because he actually did this whole thing to me .
I am Bell Reynolds. I am Doctor Reynolds cook. Doctor Reynolds is very nice indeed. I think he is a very good owner. Yes I said owner, and I am a slave. I don't ever plan on running away though. I was just a cook until a man came into Doctor Reynolds home. I really like him, and his name is Toby. He got his foot cut off for escaping. I just think that is cruel. I thought it would be nice for me to get him some crushes, so he could at least walk. He never used them, and I just wasn't very happy. One day I went over there to see how he was doing. I made some boots for him to make it even easier. I got over there and he was laying in bed. I told him I made some boots and was about to put them on. He yelled at me and said he didn't want them. I insisted and he said that a women can not tell a man to do something they don't want to do. I ignored him and started to put the boot on one foot. He yelled at me again and I said that he couldn't do anything to stop me. He got a mad look on his face. I just knew I tricked him in using those crushes and I was very pleased with myself. He got up and used them. I would step back to have him get closer. He got used to them and one day he finally could walk. I was super happy. I feel like I did something very generous. Ever since I saw him I knew he would survive I just knew it.

ReplyDeleteHello there, my name is Genelva. I work on Dr. William Reynolds farm land with all of his other slaves. I have been here for quite awhile now, but as life goes on I manage to get through this. I have now heard of a man named Toby, Toby is very brave himself, he has managed to run away from this place so many times that its so hard to count... But in the end he ends up in a mess. Toby is very strong too,.. This now makes me curious about this Toby. He seems very interesting. As I kneed the dough that Bell had given me to do, we talk. We talk about this Toby. Since Bell is one of the women that takes care of people who are sick and hurt, she tells me about someone she is currently taking care of. The person that she was caring for was Toby. Toby had secretly escaped (again) into one of the trailers that one of the white men were riding on horseback. It was just right after Fiddler was done playing the fiddle at the gather up, he had noticed that he knew that Toby escaped. Just as soon Dr. Reynolds had found out he sent out the men to catch him. In the end Toby was punished with a foot chopping session and had part of his foot cut off by two of the white men that had caught him. Soon after he was in pain, he got his foot wrapped by Bell herself. Bell kept encouraging Toby that he will live, that some day he will be able to stand up and walk again. I almost felt that something was going on between them two.

Four Years Later......

It's been awhile since I've really talked, Toby's foot is now healed and he is now walking, thanks to Bell of corse! I have started to develop some feelings for Toby... Strong ones too... I had a plan. One pitch dark night, I snuck out to Toby's cabin, there was a light coming from the lantern in his cabin when I had arrived. Toby had asked me why I was here,... Then I came closer and closer as I talked, I was ready. I was now close to his face, I kissed him for a long period of time. I was trying to mate with Toby,.. I loved him with all my heart. When both of us were ready, someone had heard us, one of the white men had came in and saw me covered with the bed sheets and Toby standing there. He shooed me out and told me to go back to my cabin and that he would discuss this business of ours in the morning with Dr, William Reynolds. I came out of Toby's cabin without saying another word to either of them. I wrap the sheets on my body and walked out. Luther was standing there staring at me like he knew my plan.. He did..... And in that split second we both ran off, far into the meadow of grass, until you couldn't see a single shadow left....

ReplyDeleteI have missed Kunta. It's good to see his face again. I go by Maggie not by fanta. I'm really sorry for what happened to Kunta. Kunta what's me to run away with him, but that can but use in danger. I'm not ready to leave because I want to live not die. I'm really mad now I have just troubled Kunta. They have found him. I'm in a lot of pain. I have just gotten Kunta in trouble. I wish I could of changed what I did. I think I have lost him for I did was wrong. Now I'm free. I have used Kunta to be free. I feel really bad. I'm.9 really happy that I have ran away. I'm really happy now that I'm free. I can do anything. Maybe I can start life again.
Hi my name is Bell I really do respect master Reynolds I heard Toby got his darn foot cut off so now I have to watch after him for a while. Toby got a fever to, and all he does is fuss about it I tell him that he can still be a man he just has to believe. He ain't understand though. I ought to be on my way to the kitchen though, and if Toby wants food he can walk to my kitchen.well it is sad that Genelva ran away but hopefully she may find freedom. Toby can walk on his foot much better. He is just as strong as he was before his foot was cut off, maybe even stronger.

Now we are havin a big hoe down. "Come on Toby we's dancin' now, and we jumped over the broom so you's be dancing with me now.
Toby you are crazy for thinking like eunning off again, that's crazy talk. Expesially when I'm pregnant.
My gosh she's beautiful, I just had a baby daughter, but Toby wants to name her Kizzy which means stay put.
Poor Toby fiddler past away he must be devastated.

I am talking to tobby I hug him. i say how he got her.he told me that he ran here.i tell him that I can talk English.i ask what his name is he tells me what his name is.i ask how u spell it.how did they name u I asked.then i looked at him.then i kiss tobby. then I just straight at him.i tell him if anyone comes out will kill u and tell him we can not be together. he siad why can we not be together.then i say if they find u he will kill u or bring u back.then he said that i will go to the north.i say that if u go there what will u do there.he siad i will get a white mans good.i tell him there is no good there.u do not know how to do white man goods.then I say how will we get there.he said we will head towards the sun and get there.then I turn around and say no I said I will stay.i start to yell.i tell he can not help no one. i open the door and start to look at the master walking towards me.i start to cry because they see him.i go to my room and fell like I am about to die.i start to cry again.i know that they are about to get him.fall in my bed cause I her him screaming.i start to cry harder.

I went outside with my brother and mrs. Reynolds and watched everyone dancing to some fantastic music. The fiddlers were also playing music. They eventually ended play music and stopped dancing. Then me and my brother walked outside to talk before we left the area. I asked him about the money he owed me. He talked to me about it and started to leave. Then after that me and Mrs. Reynolds talked about him as mr. Reynolds was leaving. Then I went inside and rested. Then the next I watched the people dance again and listened to the fiddlers play more amazing songs. They were done after awhile then I went back inside. The next day my assistent and I had to go and see how Toby's foot was doing after he ran away for a day and threw a rock at a persons head they captured him and they chopped one off so he couldn't do it ever again. I was seeing him and I knew that his foot was still very infected. I told them he might die or never walk ever again. They were very disappointed. All Toby would do is yell and roll around. I was about to leave so I told the people I would be gone for a while so they should start making a grave in case he died when I was gone. I also told them to bury him where he was. Also not to move him at all. So then I left for a couple of days. Then the next day I went over and met with mrs. Reynolds and talked about our daughter and she was doing. Then a couple weeks after that i saw toby getting married to his love he was very happy. Then after a long time I was there to help them with their kid and help her be born and then after that I left their house and went back to mine.
Trumbull/Slave hunter: Mr Renalds tells me to kill Toby. I fought with him thst I should just make it do he cant walk again. He just tells me to do what I want with Kunta Kinte when I find him, so I decide to cut his foot off. We stopped at a farm to get something to drink. As we talked to the farm owner we heard some yelling in the barn and got suspicious of what was going on. Then a black women walked out and stopped. After her ran out the slave we had to catch. I didnt know if it was him at first so I asked the owner of the black lady and he said he has never seen that slave. We chased him down, and he threw a rock at my head. I got mad so I got a net and trapped him. When we got him wore down we tied him to a tree. We gave him a choice to either loose his foot or private. With the foot we were going to cut it off with an axe, and the privates with a knife. He chose foot.

My name is Bell Reynolds, I cook for Doctor Reynolds. I am taking care of Toby right now so he doesn't die. He got his foot cut off by the slave hunters. I bring him stuff like boots. I think that Toby is going to run away again, because he didn't answer me when I asked him. I make food for Toby and Fiddler. Toby just gave me a wood bowl to grind food like corn and others. I invited Toby to dinner tonight. Toby and I are talking. Toby was the first man to make me something in twenty-two years, in return I gave him a pair of socks. I like Toby a lot. Toby proposed to me. Toby and I just got married, and we hopped the broom. Toby met someone and is thinking of running away with him. I am telling him what happen before I was here at this plantation, and my old husband ran away and I helped him. They killed him and sold my two little girls that I had and got moved here. I just had a a baby girl, we named her Kizzy. Toby and I went to watch them bury fiddler, Toby is very sad. I am taking care of Kizzy, most of the time. Toby wants to teach Kizzy the ways of his clan. I think Toby is going to run away with my child because the drums are going, I am scared. I see him and I am grateful. He isn't running away. We are heading back to the house. Toby named our child for fully.

ReplyDeleteI will be taking care of Toby. I am trying to get him out of bed. And I did, he used the kruhes I made.i am convicting master to let Toby be the driver. I'm proud of Toby for driving mr Reynolds.i am have Toby over for dinner he has made a grinder for me for my corn I am grateful.now we are taking about the master.and we Toby is driving to the big celebration with the master, I made some socks for Toby.toby came over to my hut to day.i am getting married with Toby.we are having a celebration for my marriage.i think we are all having a good time.i don't like the none sense that Toby is talking about I don't want to die.i am pregnant. i just had my babie and we are naming her is kize .
I'm am watching fiddler get buried.i gave kize to toby to do he's rich awl.
I thought Toby was going to go with the drummer but he is going to stay.

I hear someone open my door. It was Flidder. He asked me what I was doing. I responded back saying I was praying. He yelled at me because I was praying. I told him I was praying to be free again. I tried escaping once but they found me. Flidder got up and hugged me and told me " I hope this is a good goodbye, I really hope it's a good goodbye. He lets go of me and goes outside. I grab my things and sneak outside. I look around if anyone sees me. I see Flidder playing the violin. I look at my oner. He isn't looking at me at this minute. I start off with a dash. I see wagons with blankets or some type of cloth over them. I sprint over and hop in the wagon quietly. I stay still for a while. When I took off the blanket I looked around. I grab my things and throw it on the ground. I quickly jump off. The man driving the wagon didn't even see me. He didn't even look back. That was a close one.
I went over by a tree and relaxed. After that I went to go see Fanta. When I saw her I was so happy. I could tell she was happy to. I asked her what her name was that they given to her. She replied back saying Maggie. I told her mine was Toby. She went behind me and looked at the marks on my back. I could tell she was sorry for me. We got into a huge argument when I told her we should escape. She didn't agree with me. So one of her owners saw me. I was in a panic. So I rushed out if there and took off

I came to where Toby and his master talking to the Mr. Reynolds. When we were done talking I went to guard the roads. I checked a cart that had a tarp on to make sure that no one there. Then I said "ok you are good to go" they started to go again. Later that day I went to Mr. Reynolds house and asked what that we do because a slave ran away. I told Mr. Reynolds "that there is no use to have the slave Toby. I told you a million times that." Then he said " I know " in the maddest voice he had.
After yelling at me saying that he knows. He said " Get off my land" so I left the land with one of my friends and said " that we have to find Toby and catch him. " after like a hour or two we found Toby. We asked him " I'll cut your nuts or do you want to never run again?"
He said that he wants his fit cut off. So I took my ax and cut half of his foot.

Fiddler
I can't believe how much Kunta has changed after these 9 years of hard work. I see that Ames man. Kunta is treating him better then when he was mine. "Toby" won't answer the door. I feel bad for him. Ames makes him eat hay. I found something of his. It's made out of feathers. I'm trying to make him not run away again.
They are calling me to go to the hoedown. I better get going before something bad happens. I love playing the fiddle, especially at the hoedown. I can't believe he would run away again. I hope he gets away though. I knew he'd get caught.
Those idiots just had to cut his foot off. The doctor better heal is wounds. I hope he doesn't die. Oh my god he's alive! He survived the disease. Turns out the doctor owns us now. He was way better then Mr. Reynolds.
I made some crutches for him. Hope he's happy. I heard all about Toby and Jamel. This horse is the finest horse in the place. Toby just doesn't like anyone. I trying to convince Toby by talking to this horse. We better get to master Reynolds now. Haha, Toby forgot the barn door. Here we are. I better get the master.
Belle is right about them white folks. She's so nice to the the kids. I better get to bed. Toby been doing pretty hard work. That's what he told me. I can't believe Toby is marrying Belle. The ceremony was great. I'm getting a bit old. It's killing me. I don't know how long I have. Toby has a daughter now. It's amazing. Master Reynolds doesn't like the name Kizzy. I wish I could play my own song instead of these white folk songs. I don't feel so good. My...heart...depleting.

Hello my name is Mrs. Reynolds. I am Mr. Reynolds wife. But i have an affair with Doctor Reynolds. He is way better than Mr. Reynolds. I secretly am having an affair him.(Doctor Reynolds) I am sitting next to Mr. Reynolds and John Reynolds. We are by a celebration. The celebration is in Virginia. The girl next to me speaks and says that this celebration is probably the biggest and most citing celebration in Virginia ever! I am sitting down next to John and Mr. Reynolds and doctor Reynolds puts his hand on my shoulder, I look up at him and he is staring ahead at the huge Virginia celebration. I just look back straight ahead where doctor Reynolds was looking too. I am hugging doctor. My daughter is doctor Reynolds child, and not John Reynolds. We are in the woods where no one could see or find us.

ReplyDeleteI am a warrior ! My name is kunta kinte. Not Toby. I can drive this horse very fast. I guess, I better open up the barn doors.. They're open. I am not stupid. I do drive this horse very fast ! This girl is very nice to me, bell it is. Americans they run too ! Not just us Africans. I will feed the horse. What is he doing? I better just feed the horse. I must listen to bell and not run. So, is the child his? Or Reynolds ? Mrs. Reynolds is cheating on mr Reynolds. I have a bowl for bell. I really like her. I'll bring her the other thing for grinding corn tonight. I like food. I like all of her food that's she's making. I could talk with her. I could eat and talk. Whatever she wants to do. I really like her. I think she likes me too. She made me socks. They're perfect. There is lots of hard work to do. I'm turning in early. Strong and stubborn ain't nothing the same. Nothing. I ain't never gonna be no Christian man. I'll never eat pig meat. I'm a Muslim. She accepts though. I am getting married to Bell! I.. I think I love her. I'm not to interested in the wedding. I'm just thinking about my village and my family. I belong to her, and she belongs to me. And we both belong to dr. Reynolds. Fiddler is my friend. My best friend. He is so funny. The drummer is here ! He is a very good player ! I've missed him so much. I need to keep my past with me. When I hear the drum, I am running. I am heading north to be free. With bell, my wife. My wife has had 2 babies. They were sold. I feel so bad for her. I can let this happen to her. I won't let this happen to her. She deserves so much better. I won't be like the man that went north to come back and get the babies and her. If I can, maybe I can free and find her babies to.
I have a daughter now ! A beautiful baby daughter. Her name, is Kizzy. It means she's stay put. Ain't never getting taken away. Fiddler is playing music for me. We have many talks. When she grows up, I'll tell her about Africa. About the people. FIDDLER !!! No. Fiddler fell. Off the tree. *cry*. This is the saddest moment of life, ever. This child needs to stand strong, tall. I love you bell. I ain't never loved someone like this. Like you. The drum, is here. I have Kizzy. We will be free. We will all be free. Something isn't right. Something is not right. I will stay. I cannot go. I love my wife. This is not my home. But this is my wife, my child. I will not leave. There would be many dangers. Your name is Kizzy. Your name means stay put. But not stay a slave. You're a very strong woman. You are very different, and you are great. You will always be great. Because, you are my daughter.

I was playing my drum, not for any one just playing it. Then Toby walked up and we were talking about how they both come form Africa and are slave that are willing to try to run to freedom. I am old but I am still willing to try to get to freedom and be free like every one in the north. We can fined an abilsonis in the north. He will help teach us to read and write like the white people so we can get jobs. When your here the sound of my drum come as fast as you can. Then you can come but if you don't you will not come with me. I will play my drum when it is the right time. When the time is right you will come with me if you don't I will not be mad. ReplyDeleteRight now I am listening to 2 ladies talk to my brother. I am the only doctor on this plantation and in this county.
I need the money my brother owes me. My brother ends up spending his money on alcohol. He just laughs every time I say that to him. I am tapping my brothers wife's shoulder to the beat of the fiddle. She looks at me with hidden love. I just look up and away to the fiddler playing his fiddle. He is very good. He worked up a sweat. I am seeing Toby have a nightmare. They cut off his toes. Those slave catchers don't know what to do. He is in a coma. They never know how to treat property. Toby is bringing me in the carriage. I told him to pullover. I told him I was going for a walk. I went to our meeting spot. There she was. My brothers wife. I kissed her. I asked her how our daughter was. I love her. My daughter calls me uncle William because nobody knows that she is my daughter. Not even my brother. He thinks that it's his daughter. I just watched Toby get married to Belle. I held my daughter in my arms as we watched them jump the broom. I gave my daughter a kiss. She gave me one back. Then we left. Belle had a baby. As soon as the baby was born I left. I want nothing to do with a black baby.

ReplyDeleteDr. William Renolds is in loved with John Renolds. He has a daughter which is also John Renolds daughter. He set up a wedding ceremony for kunta kinta and bell, but doesn't exactly approve. He just might end up wanting to trade bell or Toby to some other slave driver. He's helping out Toby with marriage and the baby. He has now lost one of his slaves and his fiddler and is disappointed on losing someone he owns. He's very generous how he alowed a wedding ceremony and keeps some family's together until someone of the family gets in trouble. He will be looking for a new fiddler if he wants to listen to music. He likes his slaves because his slaves obey him and work hard. If he loses any more slaves he'll be starting to get low on money. He is grateful Toby and bell has been married so he can get more slaves. He knows there's a argument up in the government about slavery but he's sure it won't pass.

My last name is Trumbull I am a slave hunter. I was hired by Mr. Reynolds along with my partner to hunt down Toby. I asked him if we needed to make it so he stays put. Mr. Reynolds told us to do what we needed to do. I set off on my horse to hunt for Toby. My partner and I stopped for some much needed water and a break. While we were there I heard some yelling coming from the barn nearby. When I looked up I saw a man and a women yelling at each other. I asked the man who let us have the water if it was his slave and he said no. It was Toby and he took off running. I took off after him , he stopped and hit me with a rock and that really hurt. I figure the best way to catch him with a net. Grabbed it from my partner and we caught him with it. Got Toby tied up to a tree and we made sure he could not run no more. Cut off 1/2 of his foot.

I got a job as the driver for my new master Mr. Reynolds. Belle helped me get that job. I really did like driving. I drove my master to a place he wanted to go and he started kissing a lady who wasn't his wife. She told him how their daughters eyes looked just like his. mBut nobody knew that it was his daughter. I was disgusted. At dinner with Fiddler and Belle and Fiddler was joking about the white men. Also he thought that maybe Missy Anne was the masters daughter, but Belle thought she wasn't. Only I knew the truth. I didn't think Belle really liked me but I guess she did, because she invited me over for dinner after I gave her a bowl for corn. I think she really liked it. At her house we talked and she gave some socks as a present. I really liked them. Later Belle and I decided to get married. We got married. After we got married I sat by a tree to think. Belle came by me and asked what was wrong. I told her I was thinking about my family and village. She told me not to think about that and that I belong to her and she belongs to me. But I said but we both belong to Mr. Reynolds. I had to drive my master to the doctor and I met a drummer. He told me he was running away. That got me excited.he played a beat and that was the one we were going to run away to. I told Belle about this and she got very upset. Which surprised me. She told me about her other man and her daughters. I felt really sad for her. Later Belle had a baby girl I said I want to name her Kizzy. In mandinca that means stay put. I wasn't going to let go of my African heritage. I went out at night just as my father had for me and I named her. Just then the drum started. I couldn't leave Belle and Kizzy so I didn't run to it. I think that made Belle happy. I promised myself that after I named Kizzy and as she grew up I would tell her about Africa and her family and how she wasn't meant to be a slave. And I kept this promise. Kizzy will know who she is.

Bell Reynolds
The doctor told me that Toby had deliria after his foot was cut off. I stood and watched him suffer. The doctor told that Toby's foot was still festered. I told the doctor that I would tend to Toby. His fever has not broken, yet, after three weeks. The doctor does not think he will make it. I put a rag on his head to help him feel better. I couldn't help looking at where his foot was cut off. He was sleeping peacefully now and I said to him, "you ain't gonna die. Belle ain't gonna let you die." The next morning as I was washing clothes outside, I heard Toby scream and groan loudly and I saw Fiddler run inside to Toby. I went inside too, and saw Toby awake and looking at his foot. I introduced myself to Toby and told him that Master Williams is the best kind of master. I told Toby that half a foot don't make a man no less of a man. I told Toby that if he wants to eat he can just walk to the kitchen door. I was talking in the kitchen with Genova. I was giving her advice about Luther. Master has his rules and we have to obey them. That's all there is to it. She was asking me if I liked Toby because I was fretting over him. She said I sure ain't acting like a woman who don't care about a man. I wondered about this. I brought Toby a pair of boots. I asked master for them and he gave them to me. I put stuffing in one of the boots where his missing foot would be. Toby didn't want me trying on the boots. He got real angry. He tried to walk and fell down. He grabbed the crutches and used them to walk over to me. He told me that he wasn't going to learn how to walk, that, he was going to learn how to run.
I was drumming in the glorious night, when I was joined by a large man name Kunta Kenta. His slave name was Toby. He was from Africa like me, I had herd of his village there. Then I told him how I was going to escape to the north and ask if he and his family if they would like to come with me to run to freedom. He said that he would love to come with me north to freedom, but he had to talk to his wife. I said to him that I will play my drum like this for the signal, boom boom ba boom boom ba boom boom ba ba boom. As he walked away I said, hey you have a good night and I will talk to when the night falls after I give you the signal. I thought what a nice boy. The next night i play the drum boom boom ba boom boom ba boom boom ba ba boom, but he did not come back. I thought he would've come back and not lie about coming back. Was a great man, so I thought. He had to of had some really good reason for not showing up. Well his lose, I get to go to freedom, hurray! I wonder what was in that boys head? What ever, I got to get going don't want to get caught escaping. Now that I think of it that big guy Toby walk with an awkward limp, he would have slowed me down by a lot. He made the right choice, to not come.

Dr. William Reynolds
He is watching John Reynolds talk to his wife. They both are watching the girls down below dance with fun music. They talk about their financial debts and John owes Dr. William Reynolds money. He thinks that he will never ever get them money that his brother owes him. The Fiddler is coming to play the fiddle for them, because they are having a hoedown. Most of them are drinking, and having a good time watching them dance to the fiddle play. He's thinking that the Fiddler did a dang good job playing the fiddle as well as he did. His expression was that he looked happy. He knows that "Toby" is missing now, and he sent the catchers after him to go find him. Also he fired mister Aymes this is what Mr.Aymes said "Do you want me to go with them to go help find Toby. Then Mr.Reynolds said "Yes and I would like it if you didn't come back with them, because you made me look like a fool in front of everyone!". He feels like he has made him feel like a disgrace. He thinks he is the stupidest man he knows right now for letting Mr.Aymes take him, because he knew he was going to run again, and that he wants him back as soon as possible either alive or dead. The catchers are near where he is. Now he ran and the catchers are chasing him down on horses. They caught him in a net, and they now tied him up to a tree, and then they hit his foot with a little hatchet. He is taking care of Toby and his infested foot and if he wakes up from his coma he will now be a Reynolds now. He does not like the slave catchers at all he hates them all to death. He is happy his brother is paying off some of his debts. He is in his carriage, and he is now off to his home. Mr.Reynolds wife is having an affair with Dr.Reynolds. They are having a picnic together in the middle of nowhere with Toby watching them, and Toby is giving the horse water. He and Ann were watching Toby and Belle get married from the side, and Ann is Dr.Reynolds daughter not Mr.Reynolds. He was probably thinking that these are some really crazy people. He is now at his brothers house the Fiddler is coming into also to play for the "White Folks" for the hoe down inside for them. They just put the Fiddler in the grave, because he died playing the fiddle. He was most likely thinking that he feels bad for Toby, because he died and he was like a father to Toby. The doctor looks like he is in his late 20's early 30's maybe. He is always wearing a hat, a suite, and tall boots almost too his knees.

I'm just sitting playing my drum when a black person comes up to me. I guess he heard me playing. We talked a while and I learned he is from Africa, like me. His name is Kunta Kinta, but they call him Toby. We talk for a few minutes and he tells me about his village and where he is from. Then, I tell him about my plan of running away. I told him when he hears me play a signal to come straight here. I played him what he will hear, he doesn't say anything, so I ask him if he heard me. He says he did, then he leaves and I continue playing my drum. A couple nights later I play my drum for him to come. I play for a while, but he never shows up, so I go on with out him.

We were drinking water. Water from another mans grounds. The water was cold nice and wet the way it should be.We all heard a noise coming from a slaves house. A lady slave ran out then a man ran away. Ran out of the house straight into the woods.I asked the man "is that your slave." He answered telling me no that is not our slave. Then it's our slave.We got on our horses and chased him. We knew he was our guy. The feeling of relief rushed over me because I won't go back empty handed.We chased him into the woods with our horses under us.We tracked him down. We eventually had him in between us. Toby picked up a rock and threw it at my forehead. I felt the blow immediately. The pain was terrible. When I felt my forehead I looked down at my fingers and blood was covering them. At that point I was determined to get him. We rode by him with a net in between us and captured Toby. He rolled around for a little while and the finally realized that he had been captured. He pushed him against a tree. We took a axe/knife and put it down on his foot. He screamed out and at that point I knew we completed our assignment. As we rode off to give our master the slave we rode off with a smile on my face.

Toby is looking so bad. I'm talking to the doctor and he tells me what happened. I look at his foot and it does not look good. The doctor tells me he has a bad fever. I feel a bit of sympathy for Toby. Mr. Reynolds doesn't think Toby will live much longer, and that we have to bury him quick if he does. But I believe in Toby. He is a strong nigger and I know he won't give up easily.
Soon Toby does get better. He can walk on crutches and he is getting stronger. He can even walk ok without his crutches! At night I am just walking around outside when Luther comes up to me. He and Genelva are almost inseparable! But he informs me about Toby and Genelva, that is something new that I have heard. I thank Luther for letting me know and I head to Toby's cabin where I suspect they are. I walk in and see them kissing. I let Toby know that he has a good girl to make a baby with. It will be a good, beautiful baby. It seems like Toby got a little embarrassed. I then walk out. I see Luther outside the door. I walk past him and head to bed. I have had enough for this day.

ReplyDeleteI was watching all the blacks have fun with their hoedown. I was loving the music fiddler was playing. I was having a conversation with some of the Reynolds. Later on after hoedown I heard that Toby ran away again. I was annoyed at him. I knew I would have to do something so he will not keep running. He was found by some people we sent. They cut of his foot so he couldn't run. They came back and put him in a house to heal. He had a bandage on his right foot. I heard that he would live and not die witch made me happy. I saw him later with his toes
Four years later
I was watching another hoedown from Fiddler. Everyone was happy. I was having another conservation about the farm and everyone. He clapped when fiddler stopped playing his song. Everyone had smiles on there face. Toby was able to walk so he started working again. I rode in the wagon that Toby drove. I heard that Fiddler died and saw him get buried. I saw the young baby that was born. The baby was a girl.

ReplyDeleteI am sad of being a slave so I go to the forest at night. It was very quiet. I start playing the drums by myself. A man comes to watch me who is another African. He must have heard me playing while he was trying to sleep. I am very excited to see another like myself. Him and I talk about escaping from being slaves and how we should team up. We devise a signal with my drum for running away. I tell him that when he hears the signal he must run and follow the sound of the drum. This could be very risky. I am sick of being a slave to the white people and i want to run away as soon as I can. He goes home after I talk with him about it. He seemed as interested as I was to run away and be free. I just have to hope that this plan will work for both me and Toby. If he doesn't show up then I will get caught and this will all be for nothing because I need his help to do this. He looks like he would be a lot of help to survive in the wilderness.

He has came back for me. I like my kunta's new name. Toby. Our love cannot be. He doesn't understand I am Maggie! I don't want to be free. I want to live! I am going to be in big trouble for being caught. I miss him already. Toby is the only one that reminds me of home. I wish he was still beside me and he never went away. I knew if I went I would either die or get captured then who know what will happen after that. He just ran and the slave catchers followed I wonder if he is still alive. I just need to know that he is okay. Maybe if I ask my master to get someone to see if he is okay? I'm almost ready to cry. I miss my family and Kunta.

He answers to the command that I say. He loves driving to. I wish he wasn't a run away blood. I can't believe that Toby got married to Bell. He still has to drive for me! I am sitting outside on the porch, it is real hot so I am fanning myself. We are just talking and occasionally clapping because everybody around us is, so it seems like the socially except able thing to do. I don't understand but i do it anyway. A little while lat Doctor Reynolds and I snick off to behind a bush to talk to me. I don't think many if any people know about our affair. I am sitting out in a large field waiting for Doctor Reynolds to show up. I see him get out of the wagon and I am so excited to see him. My hearts starts pumping really fast inside of chest. I swear it was betting so fast you could feel it, because from inside my body it felt like it was coming out of my body. Then I think to myself, "Does he get the sensation as I do when we are together. Doctor Reynolds comes to have a "picnic". We start talking about Missy Ann Reynolds, Doctor Reynolds and my child. I tell him that Mary Ann Reynolds has his eyes. I start talking about running away, just so Doctor Reynolds could can looking for me. I think to myself,"I love this man, and I want to spend the rest of my life with this man even though, I am married to Mr. John Reynolds". Then he starts taking off the top of my long, dark burgundy evening dress , and unlacing the back of my very tight egg-shell colored corset.
Hello my name is Harlan, and I am the Doctors Assistant I helped Toby. The doctor gave me orders if Toby had died I would have to lay him in ground if the doctor wasn't back form his trip in time to do it him self. My thoughts about Toby is he was a good man. I am glad he got better I felt bad what happened to Toby. I never had to lay him in the ground because he got better. Now he can walk now I took good care of him. I went outside with the doctor, the fiddler wanted to go see Toby. Bell she takes really good care of Toby she made him crouches for Toby so it would help him walk. That's how he learned how to walk again. It took a while though he still got to walk again.

ReplyDeleteI see Toby lying on the table in very much pain. He has a severe fever. Also, the slavecatchers cut of one of Toby's feet. Right at the toes. Dr.Williams says that it is infected, and there is some blood coming through the bandage. Dr. William tells me that if he dies, to bury him right away. He probably not going to survive. I think I will go out to get the shovel from the barn. Toby most likely will not survive until William comes back. I wonder if Toby will survive. If he does, we will have a lot on our hands. We will have to take care of him, and make sure he is worth anything. If he is useless, William will find something he will be able to do. He is going into Jamesburg. We are going to have a new mother. Since she cannot work in the fields. I needed to find Luther. I found him, and asked where Gelnova was. Be said he didn't know. I found her in Toby's cabin. They had made out. I told Gelnova to go back to her cabin. She was shirtless, and I threw her her shirt she took it and left. Then, I said that I was going to ask Mr. Reynolds if he was o.k. for them to be making beasts. We may have a new baby, but I doubt it. Then, Gelnova left.

ReplyDeleteMy brother, my wife, and I were on the porch. We were watching my blacks dance and singing. It was very present hanging out with them. We all can't get a enuf of them singing. That's one of my favorite thing watching them sing and dance. When I look in there eyes they all look peace full. In my head I think it is very import for them to have fun. I am really nice to them. I went to the wagon with my brother and I told him that he drinks to much and he told me that I worry to much. In my mind I thought ok now we are even. We went back and listened some more. It's my favorite when Filter sing and dances. When he uses his instrument it is like I am in heaven. The sound goes strait to my heart. I look in my wife's eyes and I know that she loves it was well. When the were over we all gave them a loud and warm hand. I was sad to hear that it was over. If I could I would listen to it all the time. After we were done I went into the house. Later I heard that Tobbe was getting married to Bell. I was so happy because I new that they would have a strong baby. I also was very happy to hear that. I new that they would be a very good couple. Me and my daunter went to the wedding. It was a very nice wedding. After words they danced around and sang. I could tell in my eye that she loved all of them. I new that she really loves bell. I think that is really important cause she is really nice.

I am knoching on Toby/ Kunta Kinte's door. I opened the door and saw him praying. I was yelling at him asking him why he was praying and what something was. Then I was called to go to the howdown. Now I am playing the fiddle for the white men. I am hoping that toby gets to be free. I heard the horses and got worried. I said that there is nothing he can do except get to the plantation. Now i heard the chickens going crazy. I said whatever you is you better got on out of here. Then i started talking to someone. I said you never seen me. I yelled yha you alive. I am telling toby that we owe money dr willams.

ReplyDeleteI'm watching people dance and I talk with some of the Reynolds. The people dancing looks so free and happy. They look like they are having so much fun. But the Reynolds? Thats a different story. They are so serious and they always have things on their mind. " I drink too much and you worry too much," one of the men say. I ignore him and take a sip of my Whiskey. A day or two later I am at a hoedown. Many of those niggers are dancing with smiles on their faces. All of a sudden the fiddler comes out to perform the solo. We all stand quiet and we hear his beautiful music. He has such a gifted talent to be able to fiddle like that. When he is done performing his solo we all start to clap. A while later I walk into this cabin looking building. I'm wondering why I am even here. Problably just another slave trying to run away. I see Toby laying in pain from an amputation.The pain looks on the bearable. I cannot believe those men chopped off half of his foot." I think Toby is getting a little sick." I said to the assistant. "Make sure you take care of him," I walk out of the cabin and walk onto the driveway. My carriage is waiting there for me. I get onto the horse carriage and I have been riding on here for a couple of hours. I asked to take a walk and Toby parks the carriage. I walk into the field and see if this beautiful woman.And that is the woman that I'm having an affair with.

ReplyDeleteI'm with Toby. I laid a wet towel on Toby's head. I'm leaving the room. I'm cooking with junalva. I saw him driving the carriage I walked up to him and started talking to him. I sitting down eating and talking to fiddler and Toby. Toby and fiddler are going to bed. Toby brought me a corn grinder pot for me. He said he would bring the grinding part tonight I'm so happy. Toby came over, we are talking. I'm mixing dough for bread, Toby came in. We talk. We are getting married right now. We jumped over the broom, and music started playing. Lots of people danced.i saw Toby go to a tree so I went over to him and sat down we talked a little. Toby wanted to escape, but I said no. I told him about my last husband. I gave birth to a daughter, I'm so happy. Toby named her Kizzy. When I heard fiddler died I went to the funeral. I went to find Toby after he left. We came back together, Toby put Kizzy in the crib. ReplyDeleteI've been here for a while now. I haven't been to any of the hoedowns. I don't want to celebrate anything with those whites. I've been praying for awhile, down on my hands and knees, just praying. Wishing. Hoping. Because I'm running away. During the hoedown. * * * I look outside and see everyone- the Fiddler included- dancing, singing, having fun. Something I don't see that often. But now is the time. The time to go. I take off into the trees, not looking back, not thinking about the Fiddler or anyone else. I have to get out of here. I run down a dirt path, desperately looking for something that will tell me the way north. Towards Fanta, because I know that's where she is. Suddenly, I hear horses. And horses mean white men. I fly into the brush and crouch down, hoping they won't see me. I see Ames and another white man. They meet together and start talking, about directions and the north. The north... as they start off in their different directions, I jump into a cart, knowing that its leading to Fanta.* * * I found her! I found Fanta. The moment I see her I jump out and hug her. "Kunta?" she asks. "Fanta," I reply. And we talk awhile, and I learn her name is Maggie. I tell her about freedom, the north, about running away. She asks me what I'll do when I get there, and I say that I'll get a job. But she objects, says there's no cotton or tobacco or anything to pick. That I'm crazy. "We could go now," I say. "Please Fanta!" But she pulls away from me and tells me that she will stay here, where everything and everyone is safe and fed. She opens the barn door and gasps. Oh no...white men? "Who you got in there with you, Maggie?" I hear a man say. And there's no way out of this barn! There's only one way. Out the door to where the white men are. I take a deep breath and take off, the whites suddenly yelling at each other. My legs start to ache and my lungs start to burn. I look back and see they have net... Oh no. I stumble and get caught in the net. And even when I try to get out, it's impossible. *** I'm tied to a tree, white men standing around me. My head is beaded with sweat from the fearful curiosity surging through me. Suddenly, one of them pull out an axe. Tells me that I can't run off without one less foot. And that's the last thing I hear next to my screaming before I black out. *** I awaken in a sharp pain in my foot. Oh yeah, I think to myself. One less foot. The Fiddler comes through the door and looks at me, his hard expression softening. "YOU ALIVE!" he yells, but I all I do is moan from the pain. Belle comes in and smiles. I don't smile back. "What kind of man would do that to another man? Why don't they just kill me?" I ask, tears suddenly streaming from my face. "He's actually a good master," says Belle. She pulls something out from the side of the fireplace and sets them in front of me. "I asked for these crutches and he gave them right to me." I just glare at her, then sit up. I attempt to stand, but I fall flat on my face. Pain rushes from my foot to my head- I pretty much hurt everywhere. I struggle to get to the crutches, but I do. I stand and Belle claps. "You gonna walk, lord praise it you gonna walk Toby!" she says, but I shake my head. "I'm not Toby, I'm Kunta Kinte! And, I'm gonna do much more than learn to walk. I'm gonna learn to run!"
Trumbull- slave hunter episode 3
ReplyDeleteOne of the slaves ran away again and now he wants them dead. Now the chase is on for the is on. We have chased him before. hand we have used the same thing over and over again, but now it will be fun. Looks like we tracked him to a farm. We see a slave run away and ask the owner if he has seen the slave before and he says no, so we know that was him now we have to go after him. We are on his tail and closing in. We threw the net and got him all tied up and starts to panic. He just keeps squirming trying to get out. We can't get a good grip on him. Now we have to take him back, but now we give him the punishment so he can't run again. He didn't want us to kill him with the knife, so we cut off his foot. He screamed and moaned and then he past out from loosing too much blood. There was blood every where on the ground and his stub for a foot was discussing and fleshy. So we took him back to the doctor and he fixed him up and he put on some bandages to stop the bleeding and he said that he might live or die. Now he is the doctors slave. Now we wait until he runs again, but he probably learned his lesson. If he does run again, we don't know what we would do to him when he runs again, but we might have to kill him.

Harlan can you hand the wrap to me yes sir. Dr. Renolds just told me he has a fever. So I have to take care of him for awhile. A couple weeks later Toby is doing better Bell is brining him food one day he starts getting up and walking using the crutches Bell made. I knew he was a strong nigger and I was right soon he was walking around without the crutches. A couple weeks later I was walking around it was nighttime I saw Luther and I asked were Genelva was. He said the she was with Toby. I assume that they are in Toby's cabin, I was right. When I walked in I saw them kissing I think that I emberessed Toby. I told Genelva that he would have to ask master about them having a baby firs then I had her leave. When she left I told Toby that he was a very lucky man. Then I left and went to bed

My name is Mrs.Reynolds John Reynolds wife who has an affair with doctor Reynolds. Wow me and my husband have a great life here on the plantation. We have had slaves for as long as I can remember. It's a good thing that we have slave else me and my husband. There's one slave that ran off a few.Dr. Reynolds, my husband, Dr. Reynolds wife and me. We're at the festival and Dr. Reynolds wife and I talk. Dr. Reynolds taps me on my shoulder.
I'm in the woods waiting for Dr. Reynolds. Once he gets here we talk about my dream and about our kid. Then we sit and talk about other things. Then Dr. Reynolds starts hugging me. Me and Dr. Reynolds now have an affair.
I was sitting on the porch watching Fiddler play his fiddle while all the slaves were dancing. It was a wonderful day, and everyone was happy and enjoying themselves. I started talking to Doctor Reynolds, I love this man but i am married to his brother. I met Docter Reynolds by the tree today we were talking about running away and being together. He said no becouse he thinks he'll meet up with his brother again. I told him about a dream I. had last night. In this dream I was Doctor Reynolds dog and we could run away together and be happy forever.

Runaway slave comes to my home with a foot cut off b a slave catcher. Doctor Reynolds comes to bandage his foot and I am there to help. Ton yells in pain all the time so fiddler always checks on him. Doctor Reynolds isn't sure if Toby is going to live but I know he will. Toby is alive the next day! He is starting to wonder about his new master, I assure him that he is a good master. Toby tried to walk on his fort but he fell down. That man is strong so he got right back up with some crutches under his arms, and started walking. He is going to live and walk! Toby says that he will run and do much more. By the look in his eyes I can tell that he is right. Nine years later to y and I get married, and we are blessed with a baby girl, we decide to name her Kizzy.

I had to load the crates onto the wagon .The white man tells me to do stuff I don't know who he is. They are trying to send me or sell me I told if I'm going to be good now I'll be a good Niger. Fiddler came into my room and told me to quit praying I was praying . I'm going to try to run away again I have to I'm going try to find fanta. Fiddler says I can't going to catch they will never catch me fiddler said whites go by the law and Niger's die by the law fiddler went away and I started to pack my stuff. I ran away I and I got into the wagon. I went into the the chicken coop . I went to fanta she saw All my wip scares . Fanta doesn't under stand African talk anymore . White men didn't leave us anything. I told fanta that I needed her . I want to leave with her be free but she wilt come. Fanta wilt come with me the white saw me and they are coming after me .i threw a rock at one of them and hit him. But then they caught me with a net .then they cut my foot off .im back and they wrapped my foot up. Fiddler came in and talk to me . Bell took Karen of me while I was sick they thought I was going to die but I didn't. I don't know why they didn't just kill me instead . This girl came in and tried to put boots on me but I don't need boots I'm never going to walk again . I can walk with the crouches I'm gong to learn to walk then I'm going to learn to run . Fanta cam and talked to me . I like bell I like her face her face looks like she is from Africa . She got mad at me I told her I wilt call her that anymore . I was getting the horse ready with fiddler and I said I was a mendica warrior he said just to give that up. So we got on the wagon and fiddler said I thought you good drive and I said I can. Then fiddler said well your going to have to drive fast because the barn doors are still closed. Bell said I shoulder run off again I said nothing and she said Africans and the I said Americans . I took Dr.rondalds to the woods and he said to stop and Said I was going to take a walk and he stopped with ms.ronldals. The next day I eat with fiddler and bell . Then bell asked me to have dinner with her . The next day fiddler came and talked to me and we talked about driving is a hard job .i went to bell and said I know I'm not easy to be with and she said I know . I asked her if she whited to get marriade and she said ya . The next day I got marriade to bell and we had a big party And I went over to a tree a sat down and bell cam over and we talked . The next night I was driving the wagon and stopped and then I heard drumming and I went over to it I found a guy drumming and he was he was from Africa and said if I would to go and escape I said ya and talked him and said listen for the drum when you hear it run as fast as you can . The next day I talked to bell and she started to cry and said she had a husband and he got hung when he ran away . The next couple months later I have a baby I named her Kizzy for stay put the next day I am talking to fiddler and he stopped responding he died we barrierd fiddler .

ReplyDeleteI came over to get Toby Mr. Reynolds. I really like Kizzy, we pretended to jump over the broom and had our first kiss. I really want to know what happened to Toby's foot. I heard he tried to escape and they caught him. I'm going north and nothing is going to stop me. When I get north I'm going to get Kizzy and bring her north too. I tried to tell Kizzy that there was much time left, but she just walked away. I'm packing up to leave and Kizzy is helping me. Kizzy told me that there were patrollers, but I don't care. I'm going to tried my best. I left this morning I said goodbye to Kizzy but, I'm very scared I hope I don't get caught by them slave hunters. It's been a about a week, but they caught me I tried my best to get away from him but he had me in chains. When I got back to the plantations he whipped me it hurt so bad!! I also got sold, but I really hope I get to see her again. I'm in a new plantation now and, I really miss Kizzy.

I see Toby I have never seen him so into working. It seems like he lost his spirit.i go to Toby's shed. He is praying to alla so I tell him not to. I tell him I'm scared of Whitman. We joke around. I think he's planning to run away. I tell him no! I try to convince him to stay. He cant leave if he gets caught he will be punished. I say goodbye to Toby I will miss him he was like a son to me. He is gone now he decided it was best to run. I'm now playing the fiddle at the hodown. It is so fun to play the fiddle, but I worry about Toby. He got caught and I want to know how he is doing. I'm worried how hurt he is. I hear him crying in the doctors place so I run there. And he's alive! I am so happy. But they cut his foot off. And I can see he's in pain. I tell him that we have a new master now. I feel bad for Toby. I hand him his crutches and leave. Toby's the new driver and I'm happy for him. He keeps getting angry because he keeps talking about his tribe. I am not sure he knows how to drive. The white say there free and I don't like it. I think Toby knows something about dr. Reynolds. Toby's just got married so u get to fiddle for his party. After the party we drive dr. Reynolds to the house. But I'm feeling old. I am going to die soon I can feel it. Toby's child was just born! I am proud for him. Now Toby wants to know about how to lie. I am dying right after he asked that. I am glad the last thing I did was play the fiddle next to Toby.

I am at my brothers party. When he brings up his debt in front of the women this doesn't make me very happy. Then I talk to his wife who I find very attractive.she talks to me about not being to hard on my brother. I am not sure what I am feeling right now. As payment for his debt my brother gives me two slave named Toby and fiddler. Toby is not in very good condition because to slave hunters cut of his foot this doesn't make me happy that they did that to him. After a while bell my cook asks me if Toby could be my driver. I am not sure wether this is a good idea after thinking about it for a second I decide to say yes. I am now going to meet mrs. Reynolds. I can't wait to se her. When I see her this makes me very happy. I had a lot of fun seeing her but I have to go so I leave. Toby and belle are getting married this this makes me very happy. They have a kid named Kizzy. Noah her boyfriend runs away when we catch him a week later. He had a traveling pass. my assistants whip him tell he tells them that Kizzy gave it to him this makes me very angry. I sell Kizzy another land owner.

Dr. William Renolyds my owner was speaking to me about how I should not run away jokingly. I walked out of his house and to the wagon out side I set a basket in the wagon. Toby was there I started talking to him about my vegetables, and traveling the world. He told me I was a good women. Then I made him promise not to run away. Later that day around dinner, Fiddler, Toby, and I all sat around a table eating dinner talking about my family and the British. Missy Ann, John Renolyds daughter knocked on the door and I let her in. She said Master William said she could have a cookie so I gave her a cookie and she walked back out the door. I told Toby and Fiddler that she was an angel. They were saying that she was actually Master William's daughter not John's. I told them "No, she is John Renolyds daughter no one else's." Toby walked out of the house and Fiddler and I speak alone, then we say our good nights and go to bed. The next morning Toby comes to my door and brings me a corn basket for no reason just a gift. I know now I have very strong feelings for Toby. Told him I make dinner at sunset and there is usually left overs, so I told him to meet up with me. It was late night when I meet up with Toby. I tell him what we are going to eat, but then I ask him if he wants to talk or if he wants to eat. He tells me it's my choice, so I start a conversation about how he must drive a wagon up to a festival. After I spoke of George Washington I felt nervous and started to cry. While I was crying I gave Toby the socks I made him. He gave me a big hug and kissed me! The morning came again, Toby knocked on my door. He walked in and told me he was never going to be a Christian or eat pig meat. I told him I know and smiled. We hugged and he gave me a kiss. Later on we "jumped the broom" got married. I wore a long beautiful dress with a flower tiara. Then Toby and I kissed each other. I hugged and danced with everyone. I saw Toby walk to the side and lean against a tree. I walked to him and told him we belonged to each other, and laid my head on his shoulder. Later that night Toby was talking about the drummer and how he was gonna set us free. I told him to stop speaking of being free. I told him what happened to me when I was young and in love. How the man I loved ran away to be free and would come back for me and my babies and he came back but they hung him. I never saw my babies again because they sent them away. I cried my eyes out, Toby held me in his arms. Told him that, that could never happen again to me. He realized I was pregnant, he hugs me close! I had my baby, it was a little girl. She was very beautiful. We named her Kizzy which means stay put in Africa. Toby tells me how he loves me and how he must call her Kizzy. He takes her out of the house. I hear the drum signal and run out of the house looking for him. I'm so very scared he will run away! I can't find them anywhere. I drop to my knees and cry. He comes back to me, he tells me "this is not my home, but this is my family." Then he walks me home with Kizzy in my arms. He puts Kizzy in her cradle and speaks to her.

I, Kunta Kinte am trying to run away once again. This time these people caught me. They cut off my foot, it hurt very bad. I didn't want to live anymore. Then my foot healed. I can walk again. Me and bell just got married. We had to hop over a brioom. Weird right.later we had a baby. I got to name her. Her name is Kizzy. I named her Kizzy because it ment stay put.

Fiddler heard Toby say he would be good and he was confused and laughing. He knew Toby had something up his sleeve. I went to talk to Toby and he said he was gonna run away. I felt bad and thought he would get caught. Toby said he was gonna board the wagons. I said goodbye and then I went and played my fiddle for the reynolds. I saw the wagons driving away. I knew he was on one of them out looking for fanta. toby got his toes cut off by slave catchers. We were talking. We got traded to dr Reynolds and he is nicer. I like him. Toby says he will try to run still. I'm worried for him. Toby is convinced he is still mantilla warrior and he doesn't realize that he's a slave that should always work. He's like a horse. He can't run. He's driving the wagon. I laughed at him for his clothes. I went in to get mr Reynolds. I'm eating with my family and telling a story. Toby came down and thanked bell. We are now talking about genelva and how her and Luther ran away but came back and got sold to different plantations. I am now playing fiddle for Toby's wedding. I'm talking with Toby on the wagon. Toby asked me what I should tell master what my daughters name means (kizzie) I said you should say it's a family name on belles side. I started playing a song. I fell over. I am dead.

I was going outside when I found Toby right outside. He was telling me why he came to where I lived now. Then he kissed me. He then told me that he could not stay here much longer anymore. He told me his plan too. Then next morning he told me to run away with him. I told him I do not want to go. He kept on asking but I said no no matter what. Then they herd us and he started to run off. Two men on horses chased after him. After that I did not hear of him. I kept on crying after that and kept crying for hours. I thought that they killed him but I doubted that he died. I was wondering how he is now. Is he hurt or was he fine or killed. Then when I was working I found out that he survived. I knew that he might never walk or he might walk someday. After a while I found out that he can walk again :). .

ReplyDeleteI am much older now. I have a strong built body. I tell my owner I will be a good man. I am told I can't pray. I hop on wagon and ride a way then I get off unnoticed. I meet up with Fanta. The whites are going after me. The whites capture me. I am getting treated for my sickness. I am mad at the slave catchers. I am alive but I will I fired for a long time. I think my self why not I just lay here and die. I get offered shoes but I say I won't walk again. I start to walk with crutches and I tell myself that I will learn to run. I keep trying to tell fiddler that I am a warrior from Africa. I am havering a great time driving with fiddler. We go to pick up Mr. Reynolds. I tell bell I will do absolutely nothing against my religion. After I drop of fiddler I hear a drum in the distance. I find him sitting in a tree. He talks about escape. I am anxious to get north with the drummer. I tell bell about it but she does not want to go. I now have a baby daughter. I talk to fiddler to get advice to see if Kizzy is the right nAme to name her. Fiddler dies while I am talking to him. I am sad he has helped me so much. I am still trying to agree on a name for the baby with bell. I hear the drummer.

ReplyDeleteI am conversing with mr.reynolds, wether or not to bring the nigger back dead or alive. My partner and I started right away to the nigger to figure out where the run away went. My partner and I made a pit stop to take a drink and start talking to some people. We have finally found our run away. We circled him and he hit me with a rock i was really mad about that and that hurt a lot and now we have the net and we are closing in on him. We have captured him now, we chopped off his left foot. Now we are taking him back to Mr.reynolds brother to see what he can do about the foot. And we are at bill Reynolds if he can help him, he has started a fever hopefully mr. Reynolds will be able to keep it down.

I am planning on running away with Luther. I am really into Toby, but I also like Luther. I always have a sly smile, like I know something others don't.

ReplyDeleteOne of the slaves ran away again and now he wants them dead. Now the chase is on for the is on. We have chased him before. hand we have used the same thing over and over again, but now it will be fun. Looks like we tracked him to a farm. We see a slave run away and ask the owner if he has seen the slave before and he says no, so we know that was him now we have to go after him. We are on his tail and closing in. We threw the net and got him all tied up and starts to panic. He just keeps squirming trying to get out. We can't get a good grip on him. Now we have to take him back, but now we give him the punishment so he can't run again. He didn't want us to kill him with the knife, so we cut off his foot. He screamed and moaned and then he past out from loosing too much blood. There was blood every where on the ground and his stub for a foot was discussing and fleshy. So we took him back to the doctor and he fixed him up and he put on some bandages to stop the bleeding and he said that he might live or die. Now he is the doctors slave. Now we wait until he runs again, but he probably learned his lesson. If he does run again, we don't know what we would do to him when he runs again, but we might have to kill him.
