Episode 2

Synopsis of Episode Two:
In Episode Two, life gets even harder for Kunta Kinte.
The slaves on the slave ship attempt a revolt that nearly succeeds, but is crushed. About a quarter of the slaves are killed, including The Wrestler.
The ship eventually reaches America, where the slaves are turned over to slave dealers who prepare them to be sold, then put them up for auction. Kunta Kinte, Fanta and the others are all sold like animals. White spectators stand around and make dirty jokes about them.
Kunta Kinte is sold to John Reynolds, a plantation owner from Virginia. Another slave, Fiddler, is given the responsibility of teaching Toby (Kunta Kinte’s new name) how to speak English and how to be a good slave.

Kunta Kinte and Fiddler

Kunta Kinte/Toby swears that he will never give in or stop fighting. He manages to escape for a day or so, but is caught and brought back to the plantation, where he is beaten almost to death. He only saves his life by answering to his new name.
At the end of the episode, Fiddler assures Toby that it doesn’t matter what a bunch of white people call him, he knows who he is. It is a very sad and proud moment.

The blacks seem to be discussing something it doesn't sound good, I'd better tell the captain about this. The captain seems to be troubled. I feel a little worried for the captain, after all this is his first journey he is not use to this. I told the captain how dangerous these people are, but he doesn't seem concerned, he sounds more annoyed than concerned. I tell the captain the story where the blacks upraised and killed every single man on that ship. Finally the captain sees my point and tells me to arm every man on the ship.I was about to leave then I asked the captain if he would like a bellywarmer this evening but he didn't answer, instead he just grunted. We took the blacks out for fresh air. They were just disgusting with vomit on all of them. All of us are armed and ready for and uprise. We were whipping them to keep them dancing, and sometimes even making them jump. They just looked at us looking a bit angry. We were watching them very closely, then suddenly they attacked us. They were killing us left and right they took out the sail men the driver, the sailors and the cabin boys. The muscular one knocks the cannon boy out. I had my gun cocked and ready to kill the muscular one, then a black threw a knife at my stomach and it hit. It was the worst pain I have ever felt a stabbing, killing pain. Then I fell down dead.

We are back on the ship top. I see one man with a key around his neck. We all attack at the same time, the man with the key. Then we attack the rest of the white men.I see a man with a canon. I try to move away from where the man is pointing at. He lights the string at the end. Very few people see him. But I do. I know what is going to happen, I figure this could be more peaceful and better than where I am going now. The fuss is almost all burned out, I am ready for what is going to happen next. POW! Everything went white.

A girl just jumped off the boat. Now, 3 men are fighting over it, "why wasn't the wench tied up? I told you to keep her tied!!!" " I will kill you I you do this again." they are arguing. There is no god but Allah I say. We are on a big rampage. They are fighting us. Fists, kicks, and anything we can find to protect us. We are taking men down. I just saw one of my men throw a knife into one of the white men. Then, I observed that someone was lighting the cannon. BOOM...... Screaming bloody mess. I have instant pain. It just hit me I am dying. Everything goes away......

The wrestler was about to get shoot, and someone threw a knife and killed him so he couldn't shoot the wrestler. Then the guy fired the cannon. When he fired the cannon the wrestle died because of the stuff in the cannon. Before he died he was thinking about what would happen if he would jump over the edge like that one other girl. He was feeling like he shouldn't have to be treated like he is treated on the ship. He feels like he should be treated like a normal human being. He is thinking what it would be like if he got away and wasn't treated so bad by the people on the ship, what it would be like to be treated normal.

On the ship Kunta kente talked to me. I was crying, it was sad and scary.
We were supposed to be dancing and exercising but we went onto our knees and were talking. The next time i seen kunta kente I was in the cage and I was crying. Kunta kinte came over and was talking to me. He was in the cage next to me. We talked for a short amount of time. I was being sold. I fought on getting pulled out of the cage it was very scary. Kunta kente looked mad while I was being sold. I sold for 115 pounds. To a man I didn't know what was going on at first.

There was a big fight. Now, we one. The white man has died. Yes ! Even though I am dead, we have still won. Victory. The canyon had bested me, its sad. The white man had almost gotten me. But we are all one family . And as long as they're all safe, it is a grand victory. We have won in our minds, I don't know what will happen now, or next. I'm not alive to see, but I have faith in kunta kinta. He can do this, he is strong. He will win.

  11. Auctioneers:
I came in the room humming and here was a black man there, and I went to him and burned his skin so I could put the company name on him. In my head I thought was a strong man he handled it different than most men. When the auction came I sold this one woman that started of at 50 and went to 115. I thought she was a very strong woman, but I could tell that she was very scared. The next row was a black man and I could see that he was a good one so I stared the auction at 150 and he sold for 170. He was a very aggressive man and was strong, and Mr Jones bought him. I thought it was a very good auction and we sold some good blacks.

I am an oxaneer selling slaves. I think I do a very good job at my job. I always sell the best way I can. I try to get up to 100 pounds for the girls and 150 pounds for the boys. I agree with slavery, but it is such hard work to sell so many slaves. I work very long and just can’t wait for it to be done. I do this job, because I care that people need help with their farm and other things. Today we started with the girls. This girl ,that was first, was sold for 115 pounds and I am very pleased with my work of persuading the buyers. I feel that slaves are a great way to get work done at the farm the most. When I got done with the girls I was very pleased with how we were selling. Then we got to the boys. I got this boy that was being so difficult. I hate when I get people like that, because then they are wasting my time. Finally he stopped fighting. One by one we were selling like crazy. I just love it when I sell one and get to the next. The group today was kinda small, because I heard that a lot died on the ship. I also heard that they tried killing some whites, which I hate because the blacks need to be slaves. The blacks are no where near like the whites. Finally, we got all done with the selling and I was very proud with my work, but I was a little dispointed that we didn’t have a lot of blacks this time.

My name is Ames. I am Mr. Raider's friend. I told him that when he was away at the auction there was a horse who had a baby. I have not yet seen this "Toby" person. But Mr. Raider says he sure is a good one. The Mrs. was very happy to see him again. The Mrs. And the daughters kept asking if he had brought them any presents from London. And he said "no" and they were all sad and then he said "kidding!"

I cry all night. I miss my family. We are so far away. I feel like I won't ever see them again. Where is my father? I keep asking myself this question. I am learning to stay alive. They took me from my home and I never got to say goodbye. Kunta thinks everything will be alright. He thinks we will defeat the whites. I don't think I believe him. He is a warrior, he has to think that way. I would do anything to go back home. They are advertising me. I tried so hard to stay back. They are explaining my qualities. I do not want to be traded. They won't stop touching me. Try out their fingers in my mouth, in my hair, and everywhere else. I got sold to a man. Kunta is telling me we will see each other again. I am very scared. Kunta got traded to a different man. Oh how I wish he was with me. I will be shape rated from him and my family for a long, long time.

I want all of the slaves cuts gone. I am now speaking in front of a crowd. I am having them bid pounds on the black people. Someone has bid 115 pounds on fanta. Mr. John Ronald's has bid 155 pounds on Kunta Kinta. I wanted more people to bid more pounds on them. I had a good time talking in front of the crowd. I think I do a very good job at selling the slaves. I do my job because I think that people need help or other people to do their work. They need work done everywhere like the house, outside, and anywhere else. I try to get the girls to 100 pounds and the boys to 150 pounds. I do the boys more pounds because they are a lot stronger than girls are.

    Fiddler (Episode 2)
The Fiddler was thinking that if he got a guy for a slave that he would run like if you tried to ever squeeze a watermelon seed it would run so they went over to the girls and he was looking but the Auctioneer called them all to the stage too look at the girls. The way he was looking at the guys and the girls as if he wanted to take them all. He is telling a guy to keep putting up stuff for "Toby" because he knows that he is most likely hard working, has hard bones, and is like a monkey because he is jumping around and acting wild from what he has heard form the Auctioneer. The Fiddler now has to other people a girl and a guy. From the conversations that he is having with "Toby" he seems like a mean/nice guy but he treats him with respect. He thinks "Toby" will be a good guy and he is now taking him too there new home Virginia and the Fiddler has to teach him how to speak English and he is teach "Toby" ho to take care of different kinds of stuff and if "Toby" doesn't do the right thing they will treat him like a horse. He think that he will have "Toby" trained and everything in six months before Mr.Renolds birthday. He feels that he can accomplish this task before his masters birthday which I think he will be able too. They way he talks about Toby is really mean and he brought something back to his home for the kids to share with each other. Mr.Renolds is saying that the Fiddler has to take care of "Toby" and that he will say when he is done taking care of him. He was wearing pants that were cut up to his knees so they looked like capris and white shirt with a brown vest over that. For supper he is giving Toby pork and some water. For his night wear he is wearing a pair of pants and a striped longed sleeve shirt. They are going to a vegetable garden to pick some. Toby is riding in the wagon with wood in it. The Fiddler is in the front singing and driving the wagon with the horse pulling it.

    My character is: John Carrington

I am John Carrington, I help out with the slaves. I tell the captain to go back and keep doing his job.I'm a wealthy man. I ware make up, to make me look more rich. I watch them get cleaned up with pine tar. I look over the auction and watch all the slaves get sold, including that one kid Kunta kinte. The auction is a weird place. I collect the money from the buyers. I have to continue this process when the new slaves come in, from the ship. The captain does not like to carry slaves and I am the one that has to tell him to get more. That's what I do for the slaves and stuff like that.

I see a horse pulling up, a white one full of supplies. A man is riding on, wearing casual clothing and looking pleased. It's Mr. Renalds! He's returned home from the auction. I still remember how excited he was when he told me about it, how he was bragging to his wife and daughters about how he was getting a new slave. When he left this morning he brought along the Fiddler, who usually helps with the slaves. Renalds rides up into the land and his family greets him, wanting gifts like they usually do. The slave and Fiddler aren't here yet. I'm starting to get worried. Mr. Renalds comes up to me and smiles. "How was the trip?" I ask. "Fine," he replies. "Fiddler should be here any minute with Toby." I remember that the horse had a baby, so I lead Mr. Renalds over and we talk, about Toby and the Fiddler, about how the Fiddler is in charge of him. I guess its okay with me if its okay with him.
Later that night I see the Fiddler. "How are you liking your arrangement?" I ask with a grin. "Okay, I guess," he says, smiling. I unlock the door to Toby's shelter, as I might say, and open it slowly. He looks up at me, petrified, but I ignore it. "You're Mr. Renalds' now. Fiddler's going to teach you. Okay?" I grin and close the door again, walking back to the house. The next morning as I watch the slaves harvest on my horse, I see Toby trip on the chains around his feet. Thing is, he doesn't get up. "Stand up, Toby," I say, my fingers reaching for my whip. He still lays on the dirt, like a dead fish. "Stand UP, Toby!" The Fiddler lays a hand on my boot, and I look down at him angrily. "Fiddler, tell him to get up!" And he does so, and eventually Toby stands. Once the harvesting hour is complete, Toby comes up to me. "I'm doing my best, sir. Mr. Ames." And he walks away without another word. I'm not to sure an African like him could ever do his best. He is black, after all.

I auctioning off slaves in Annapolis, Maryland. When the slaves arrive we keep the slaves in steel cages. The slaves are chained so they do not try to escape. Later we beat them to show how strong they are and how much they can take. For the women we show their beauty and also beat them. I call up the slaves to be bid on. I describe their best qualities. The highest bid gets the slave and has to pay the amount that the bider owes. Once they are sold they are given to the people to name and take home to work or surve them. The more the slaves the more money we get. The families of the slaves are split up, if they are lucky they will stick together. The slaves will learn to speak English. Later the slaves can be auctioned off again if the people don't like them. I have auctioned off many, many slaves. The slaves come from Africa. We only have them for a little while before the action. When the slaves are all gone the auction ends until we get more slaves. We have no control after they leave. The slaves will not escape when they are chained. We keep them under control. We treat the slaves like this so they behave and so we can handle and sell them. Many of the slaves can be stubborn and will not listen. We have to make sure the look good so that we can sell then for a lot of money. I am only the auctioneer, but I have a lot to tell.

I was talking to the fiddler. Then I went to talk to Toby. He seems just like Mr. Raider said he did. He looks brave and strong. I told him that Fiddler would take good care of him. And help him speak English. I came in with another person and drank some wine. I think there will always be slave, for EVER, they will never escape ever! I have seen a bear dance. And I think that the blacks can learn. I think they have needs and hunger sand passions. I think he is very smart and he knows his own name. I ordered Toby to get up. And he didn't get up. Then the fiddler showed up and he gothic up. Then after Toby was up he came over to me and said " I'm doing my best Ames, sir." I told the Fiddler to go inside because Mr. Raiser and him friend wanted to hear music. And fiddler said well you sure came to the right person for that. I was going to give Fanta a new cover coat. I ripped her old one and brought her in with me. I ripped on Toby's hair and said that you are going to learn to answer to your name. I am now going to whip him. I am now in charge of the African (Toby) I am trying to get him to say his name, Toby. He just won't say his name. Every time I try to get him to say it he says Kunta Kinta. And he just won't say Toby. The he finally said it . And the Fiddler came over to Toby and was helping him like giving him water, and telling him that his name was Kunta Kinta but I did not hear that.

I could not bare whatching any more of the blacks, today they are getting pine tar smudged all over their wounds. It might hurt but there sure will be a bigger profit. I will have to make a big trip back to England now it will be awhile so good bye for now my fellow sailors. Maybe we will collide again. I will say again farewell.

  24. I am the Wrestler. I am in heaven now. All I remember is all of us slaves were on the deck of the sail ship, and bad things happened. The pirates were splashing the sea water onto our wounded bodies. Everyone was screaming, and all you could hear and feel was their pain. Then a woman ran out of the downstairs and started climbing the rope. She jumped off of the ship, and then all war broke loose. All of a sudden one of the pirates ran to their cannon. He started shooting the cannon onto the deck of the ship. Then I felt searing pain by my chest, and saw that I was shot by the cannon. I was so shocked. Then everything inside of my body went cold, and I realized I died. Now up here I am in rest, and don't have to worry about dying by starvation or dehydration. I am by Kunta Kenta's side very moment, trying to help him out. He can do this. He can kill the white men. I have trained him very well, and know that he is a great warrior.

    Kunta Kinte

Why must these people so rudely make me look healthy? I mean, I'm most certainly not healed, I've got cuts and bruises. They are all so rude, I wish they would trade places to see just exactly how cruel they are. At least I am off that filthy, disgusting ship. Right now I am lucky to be alive. I cannot bear to watch Fanta being sold. I just really hope I can see her again. I strongly dislike standing in front of everyone. Why would anybody purchase a person? I don't want to be owned, it's almost as if I am someone else's property. I have just been named "Toby". My name is Kinte! I just feel so owned. The Fiddler seems to interest me, at least he can tell me what I have to do. Hopefully I don't get whipped, or have anymore cruel punishment. Why does the Fiddler keep trying to make me say "Toby"! So I am currently on a Wagon riding while the Fiddler is driving, it is quite bumpy. When I had arrived at my destination then had many other blacks but none of which were from my homeland. The Fiddler is telling me lots of different things that I need to know about living here. Some man just told me I would be his someday, that was very strange and almost frightening. I will escape! My parents and tribe will not forget me! I have just proposed an idea to Fiddler, talking about running away, but he told me there's nowhere to run to. I refuse to answer to "Toby", it is not my name! I can't believe it I found Fanta! I have found a tool that could break me out of here, it could cut open the chain! That would be amazing!

Then we got hung up by ropes that were attached to a wooden bar. Then they started wiping him because he ran away and they were trying to get him to say his American name and when he said Kunta Kinte they would wip him.

He told us how we cannot order any British goods due to the protesting of our states and the British. We were all sad for that means know more music or ribbon. Then he assured us that he has bought music and ribbon in France, and then I was happy again. Ames pulled up and John told me to go inside while they talk. So I listened. My brother in-law William was trying to teach me how to play the piano. He had said that I was getting better at playing. I didn't want to interrupt but I had to ask John what was on my mind. I stated that blacks can do about nothing we do, like sleep, eat, and drink. Then I asked him why we are so afraid to teach them how to write. William's answer was, "If they learn how to write the blacks could start thinking and we don't want that. Fiddler came into the house and had asked me too see my husband. I knew he was reading his scripture but I told him I would try. John said he would meet with Fiddler so I came out and told Fiddler to go inside and talk.

  32. Ames is a person who helps train slaves. When he got one slave he let another slave named Fiddler to train him. He would take away Fiddlers stuff if he failed. He told him to teach him how to speak English. He told Fiddler that the slaves name was Toby. The Fiddler told him he did not respond to his English name but his original name. He told him to make sure he responds to his English name. Later he lets his hounds out to chase him because he had escaped. He finally found him and tied him up. He tied the other end to the horse and brought him back. He finally tied his wrists up and had him hanging. He asked him what his name was and he said his original name. He got mad and told a guy to whip him. He asked him again but he had the same response. This went on and the slave finally said his English name he was given. He asked him to say it louder so he did. He was satisfied and let him lie on the ground. He then saw Fiddler come to his aid. He told him not to let him escape again.

I don't know why we're keeping him! He did get us all the things we wanted, though! But he thought it would be funny if he pretended not to have our gifts at first! That sly fox, we were so sad at first.

When my husband and I were practicing the piano, our slave handler came in to talk about Toby. He's still in chains after four months! I thought a little bit, and I thought we could teach them how to read, so that they could understand the concepts we're trying to teach our duller slaves, but my husband said if we did that we'd get them to thinkin', and that would lead to uprisings and runaways. I asked the slave handler if he thought they had feelings. He said they have ambitions and thoughts, but not feelings. I felt rather grim after that.

When John came home, the girls and I raced out to greet him. The girls and I were very excited to see what he had brought us this time. He said he didn't have much because of the damn politics. I told him to watch his language since the girls were standing there. He had brought back some ribbon and music from his journey. He was gone to France to find a slave. When the girls and I were looking at the ribbon, we were astonished how beautiful it was. It seemed so silky. John is so amazing and thoughtful. The girls and I could not wait for his return. We couldn't wait to see what he had bought for us! Now that he is home, I am so grateful. He is my whole life. Beside my girls of course. I am taking piano lessons from William. It is going great! I overhear John and Ames talking, and I suggested that we teach the slaves to read. Then, my brother-in-law said that we don't want them to be miserable. I finally agreed, and asked him if he thinks that they have feelings, like us. He said that they have needs like us. Then, John started talking about how Toby, the knew slave he purchased, was still in chains. I thought that that was outrageous! We had had Toby for six months now, and he is still in chains! I spoke my mind, and John replied back, how he is still African, and he is still to wild. He still thinks that his name is Kunta Kinte. A couple of days after that, Fiddler comes in and asks for John. I say that he is doing his gospel studies, and Fiddler knows he doesn't like to be interrupted. He says that he must see him now. I wonder why he is so demanding? I go to the room that John is in, and tell him that Fiddler would like him. He says to send him in. He tone seems harsh. I tell Fiddler that he could go in, and leave.

I heard a black girl crying out and I saw one of my deck crew running after them. There was two black girls and one of them jumped of the boat because of the deck man. Mr.Slater felt mad because they just lost on slave. So Mr.Slater started beating the deck man up because of that. He beat the deck man up for a long time. One of the girls was anta. Then a riot broke out and Kunta Kinte throw a knife at Mr.Slater. But before the the wrestler went at him and Mr.Slater shot the wrestler and he died.

The first person walks up scared. It was a girl. When the men start checking out her to see if she was good. I start the biding. It went by really fast. The next one walks up. I start by saying that he is aggressive like a monkey. I start the biding. It goes back and fourth between two men. Then it's ends at a high number. After every bid I write down how much they have been brought for.

We are still trapped on this terrible ship. My body and mind are getting to weak. But I am a warrior. I need to stay tough if I want to survive. The other blacks and me have come up with a plan to kill the white men, but first we have to get on the upper deck. It doesn't take long before they bring us up.
It is the day of our outbreak and my mind is racing. I'm thinking about all the possibilities that could happen with our plan. I hope it works and we will all be able to return to our tribes and families. Our plan starts out as just the same thing we always do, listen to what the white men say to do.
"There is no God but Allah. There is no God but Allah." I say out loud, and the rebellion starts! We seem to be winning, our plan is almost complete. At first we take down the man with the key. We unhook ourselves, it feels so good to be able to move the same again. We charge the other men, and defeat any of them. There is only two men left it seems, the meanest one, the one that always comes down to the under ship and sees us, and a young white man which I have not seen very often. A bunch of blacks are taking care of the one older white man, and so I am standing there waiting, feeling so happy that we might be free now. I am not paying attention to the young white, but when I look at him I realize he has lit something. Before I know it, something has shot me and I am hurting for only a little bit before I die. I'm glad to say that I died fighting for my freedom, but sad that I could not accomplish my goal.

I always bring them in and take them to there owner. The captain of the ship hates doing that. I tell them the scope of the blacks on the ship. Ik that captain Davies is sad that the slaves are here. I'm the auctioneer, I sell slaves for a living. I agree that slavery is a good thing, that the slaves really don't have feelings and are just plan old dumb. But selling slaves is pretty tough. First, they have to be cleaned. Next, they have to have this nasty black tar junk put on their wounds. After they're all cleaned/fixed up then they come to me one at a time. I have men look them over if they want to. To see if they have good skin, good hair, good teeth, and what ever else they want to be good about them. After the men are done inspecting them I have to talk crazy fast. I start women at 100 pounds and men at 150 pounds, then go on from there. After a long day of selling slaves and talking fast I finally get to rest.

I was talking to Mr. Renels about the new slave. He said that his name was Toby. I went and talked to him and told him that he was soon to be mine. I was talking to Mr.Renels about the slaves and I said that in 7 years they will still be black and still be slaves. We were talking about Toby and he is very smart but he just doesn't want to cooperate. Toby fell and I told him to get up and I told Mr.Fideler to get him. Then Toby said that he was doing his best. I yelled for Mr. Fideler and told him to go up to the main house. I requested for a slave and she was afraid to come inside. I was out looking for Toby who had run away. The dogs helped find him. I told him that he would have to learn to respond to his name. I was hitting him with my whip only because he ran and he will not respond to his name. I told him to say his name but he would just say his African name. Thn he said his name.

I'm at an action and I'm looking for a slave. There is a girl that looks like a good slave. I want that girl. They start the biding at 100 pounds but no one bids so they drop it to 50 pounds. They get one bid and they bring it up to 60 pounds. I bid for 60, then they get all the way up to 115 pounds. I bid and then I get her. I am very pleased with this girl. Now, I'm at Mr. Renald's house and I see Fiddler and another black coming. They're just standing there talking, it's keeping us waiting. Mr. Renald's tells Fiddler to get up here, finally he comes up here. We go inside with Fiddler following us.

This looked as if it was a fine slave. My worries is is that he is not broken. i paid a fine price for him. I commanded my slave fiddler to beak him. Otherwise I would provoke him of his fine privlages for a nigger. I certainly will not let my new nigger eat in the house so I gave fiddler some food to take to him. Later that day it was in the evening and I was with a friend and I wanted fiddler to come play me some music and Toby came with him and I'm not quite sure but they were in some sort of quarrel.

    1. The next morning that nigger ran away. I was very frustrated. I thought fiddler was getting him broke. I decided that I would not worry about his punishment until Toby was caught. After we realized he was gone. I was infuriated I could not believe it. He must've broken his shackles because they made quite a racket when he walked. And if he ran it would have been quite noticeably loud. To catch him I sent out the dogs and my men to catch him. They did of course. And like I figured he did not get far.
When he was returned I had him whipped ferociously. Then I made him say his new name. It took several times but he finally said it. After he said his names a couple times I had fiddler tend to his red and oozing wounds. Then I let him rest. I was not pleased with the past day at all.

These slaves look like the best we could ever find, I'm very glad they came up with these slaves. George, I'm also very happy because of my old friend George coming with the slaves. I must take my owners slave and teach him. But first I must teach him to listen and be quiet. I must also tell him about America and what he must do as someone's owner. Oh, no he has ran off we must get him. I must tell them to get him before he runs off! Wow he is very smart and a strong black he will be good for what we'll make him do. This is a very fine horse. These horseshoes on my horse have broken I must make new ones and catch up to my owner. He must also learn new words so I will do that now. I have now caught up to my boss. Now Toby must eat no matter if he likes it or not, he must. I have to convince him to eat. Toby must not run for if he does there is no way to run to. I must bring Toby with me to get flower for our bosses birthday is tomorrow. Oh no! I think I might lose my job! I have to teach Toby to never try to escape. I feel very disappointed in Toby. I never really thought about what I did to be free why can't he be free? Oh no Toby's getting whipped god bless him for I hope he doesn't get killed. Finally he's not getting whipped anymore now I have to heal him before he could die. I never really thought about what I did to be free why can't kuntakinte be free? That's not very fair his name is and will always be kuntakinte not Toby.

Davies is happy that he is home but he doesn't know what is yet to come. He is angry that he has to keep going on the voyage forever called the golden triangle to pick up merchants in London, pick up slaves, and drop off everything in America. Davies is telling Mr. Carington he will never take the job again. He does not feel it is right to take negro people as slaves. He is finding all of these things are all wrong and need to be changed to no slaves at all. Mr. Davies would do other voyages but, not the golden triangle voyage. Mr. Davies is hoping or thinking he has the chance to not take the voyage "golden triangle".
He has taken the choice of being union instead of confederate. I think he would take any other voyages than the golden triangle voyage. Davies is thinking and hoping he will be able to say no to the voyage. Davies was hoping this would only be a one time voyage but its not.

I want the captain to go to auction. It will be a totally new experience for him. They better be ready for the auction on the 7th. The tar better be ready and done. The auction just finished. And then I here a shout "I am from there as well!" I want you to teach the other people to speak our language and try to learn theirs. Then the next time we are on top of the ship we will take it over!" The next day approaches very slowly but we are again on top of the ship we are at a rhythm that we do naturally but the white men look at us as if they something we do not i see a very big shiny thing they point at us always and a man chases a woman onto the deck I don't know her but by the look on Kunta kinta face he does. After the white men beat each other up we shout "attack" and everything happened so fast. When the fighting was almost over after we almost won the person fired the big shiny thing I feel a big burst of pain but now I see only blackness everything empty.

Ames didn't sound so happy, he sounded more jealous and what ever he likes he gets. Ames then said to Kunta " I'm going to get you." The next time they showed Ames he knew Kunta didn't want to be called Toby. Ames is getting mad that Kunta was getting up. Kunta then got up and said " I'm doing my best." then a smiled appeared on Ames face. Ames told Fiddle to play his fiddle because he's in the mood for some music. Mr. Reynolds is coming back with a new slave that he got at the auction. I heard that he has named it Toby. I meet up with mr. Reynolds and hear about how good this slave will be. I ask him who is going to break him in, and I am surprised to hear that he put fiddler to the job. I argued with him that fiddler will make him all wrong because he won't know what to do because is a dumb slave that has no feelings or thoughts. Mr. Reynolds says that he is putting fiddler to do it and I can't do anything until he changes his mind, I back down and don't talk about it again. While the slaves are working for me a couple months later I notice that Toby still has chains on. The next time I saw mr. Reynolds I told him about the bad news but he just said that he shall be ready for his birthday. It was obvious to me that fiddler was doing a bad job so I gave them a hard time at work. Finally an occasion came in which mr. Reynolds started to open his eyes, Toby was a runaway slave. Mr. Reynolds sent me to find Toby, I was lucky that it was cold and the black had chains on so he didn't get far at all. Once I caught him I tied him up and started back. Once I got to mr. Reynolds house I knew the slave was mine to train.

When he tells me he is with fiddler and that fiddler would be training him to become a proper field hand. This does not make me very happy I don't understand why he would have fiddler train him. Then when Toby is working in the field falls and doesn't get up even when I tell him to I get very angry. I am about to whip him when the fiddler steps in and gets him up. Then Toby escapes this doesn't make me happy because then I have to go find him when I do find him I am very angry and whip him tell he says his name is Toby when he does I am not mad or happy so I let him down and walk away

I got up and went over to talk to them about the the slaves. We also talked about the new slave Mr. John Renalds bought at an auction. The other man said that slaves are slaves and still will be slaves even in seven years. I thought different of slaves. I think that they could learn to read and write. I think that they would become angry and unhappy after awhile. They do have needs, hungers, and passions. I just don't think that the slaves are the same as the white people.

They put us in the way bottom of the ship in large cages. Kunta's cage was by mine. We talked. I was telling him how my father taught me to survive in bad conditions. When we arrived back on the main land I was put into a cage with other slaves like me. The white men pulled me and another slave out of the cage and brought us to the stand. The were grabbing my arms and were looking at my teeth. I mad eye contact with Kunta he knew I was scared. One man was behind a tall table, he was saying numbers really fast, I could barely understand him. White men would raise there hand and I was guessing that they were doing that because they wanted that slave. I was hoping I would see Kunta after this day. Today was a great day! John returned from France, where had gone to buy a slave, which he did. He brought one home and he named him Toby. I was so excited to hear John's voice outside when he had gotten back. The girls were so excited and anxious for his return as well. They quickly asked their father if he had brought them anything back from France. I was eager to know what he had brought back, too. He told us that he had "no stays", "no ribbons", and "no music". The girls groaned with disappointment. I did too. He blamed his lack of gifts on the politics. John was teasing us and said that he did have surprises for all his ladies. We were very pleased. As we were looking at our gifts Ames walked over to talk to John. Before I went inside, John asked me to bring them some brandy, to cut the dust. Later that evening, I was playing my new sheet music with William. As were playing, John and Ames walked in the room talking about who should break Toby in. Fiddler or Ames? The conversation interested me and I asked the men a few questions. Are the blacks inferior to us? Do they have much less intelligence? Why should we be afraid to teach them? I wondered, and asked, if they have feelings like we do. The doctor said that he thought they had passions, but not like we do. John ended the conversation, saying that was enough. His brother has a way with children and ladies. Ames said that Fiddler had the new slave still in chains after 4 months. The doctor said this could be because he is considered wild. Ames seemed concerned that the new slave is not accepting his new name...Toby.

  61. In the beginning of this episode Kunta Kinte is still on the ship. When they are in the slave compartment the Wrestler asks the people if any one is from his tribe. One person hears him ad says "I am from your tribe" then others start saying they are, too. Wresler says, "People of my tribe teach the people next to you to speak our language. Tell them we will have a uprising." The next time they are let out to get cleaned and dance, they all say something then it happens. Soon people are fighting, getting shot, and thrown overboard. When most of the white people have died a young white boy goes up to cannon aims at the mob and shoots it. It hits the Wrestler and kills him, that is end of the uprising. They are put back cell. Once Kunta is put back, he starts praying to Ala, his god. He is praying for the wrestler, praying that he will be okay. When the ship arrives in America, Kunta is cleaned and black pine tar is put on his wounds and scars to make him look better for auction. A few days later it is time for the auction. First round gets bought up and sold pretty quickly, after awhile he is brought out. It doesn't take very long before there is bidding war and his new master is Reynolds. On the way back, Reynolds tells his slave assistant, Fiddler, that Kunta is his to train and if he isn't trained good by his birthday Fiddler is trouble. When they are on their way home the wagon breaks so Fiddler fixes it. While he is fixing it he teaches Kunta to say "wagon". When they are back at the house Kunta gets his name: Toby. Fiddler is trying to get Toby to say his new name, but he does not want to. That night, Fiddler comes and feeds him a bowl of grits and gives him water. After Fiddler leaves Toby is laying in his room and a cricket hops in. He catches it and starts talking to it. He says "I am Kunta Kinte from the Mandinka tribe tell my father, Omorou, and my mother, Binta, that I am sailed across large river with no ends and I am in a land with white men. Tell them that I will come back." A couple of weeks later he is talking to Fiddler asking him if he wants to run away together, but Fiddler says that they can't because they will track them down and bring them back to camp. A few days he is working in the field harvesting corn when he trips and finds a axe head. Ames comes over and tells him to get up but Toby doesn't respond. Ames says his name a couple of time but he does not do anything. So Ames tells Fiddler to get him to back to work. Fiddler went over to him and tells him to get up and he does. He puts in the axe head in his pocket and gets back to work. When he is working he tells Ames, "I am doing my best.". Then goes back to work. Weeks later he is getting out sticks and flowers for Mrs. Reynolds, when Toby asked why they are getting the stuff. Fiddler says it is for Master Reynolds birthday the second biggest holiday besides Christmas. Toby asks what is Christmas, then Fiddler tells him. When Toby is sitting in his cell he digs up the axe head and cuts off his shackles. Then Fiddler walks in and sees the shackles and tells him to get going to Ames doesn't see him. So Toby leaves, while he is on the run it snows. He had never seen snow, so he started to play in it. While he is playing in it he gets captured and gets brought back to camp. When he is back at camp he gets hung by his hands and gets whipped for leaving and not responding to his name. That is end of Episode 2.

I have once now have another slave of my own. I'm still thinking of what I should call him... Gorge... No..... Oh I have a name! I shall call him Toby! He will be a great help to me.
I do not like those blacks.. So that means that Fiddler and I have made a deal, Fiddler has to raise Toby... I'm not responsible for taking care of him. I mean I'm sure that Fiddler and Toby will soon learn about each other, plus he will be responsible for teaching him how to work for me. Soon enough I will have Toby doing most of my jobs.

    ***********************************************************************************************************
OH MY GOODNESS!!! Fiddler is gonna be in so much trouble when he gets back here.. I'm so mad at Fiddler,.....I have now found out that Fiddler has done a bad job taking care of Toby. Toby has escaped from his chains, and ran off into the woods somewhere! It had just snowed that night, I had sent out some of my men and search dogs to go and look for Toby the next morning. Toby has now learned his lesson,... He learned his lesson by being hanged by his two bare hands and forced to be whipped in the back until he could learn his new "Real" name. He was saying answers like My name is Kunta Kentay...... Oh dear I don't remember much of what he said tho. Until after a good 5 minute whipping he finally said his "Real" name. After all of that Chitter Chatter I had a good straight talk with fiddler and how he should be behaving and how he needs to be more responsible with taking care of Toby. I now should now get back to work now in my office. I shall talk maybe later

He tried to run but the townspeople surrounded him and I got him back.

On the way home from the auction one of the horses shoes broke so we had to stop to fix it. Master Reynolds saw the slave reaching for the hammer, and I hade to take it away. We started talking and master Reynolds and me made an agreement that if I train the slave to be good, and listen, and obey, then my family and I will get to sleep in the good cabin. We were trying to think of a name for the slave, and Mr. Reynolds asked us if we hade a Jorge yet. I told him we already hade a Jorge so he decided his new name was Toby. I told him that he was a slave and he would listen to me and Master Reynolds.

I was sitting looking at the moon.Thinking could my family see the
moon,is it the same moon. Then I heard someone hoping they could ease
my pain.I looked through the bars kunta kita was there.I asked "could
that be the moon the moon my family sees."He said no those words
hurt.He went on about how everything was different here. Each word he
said was like a anvil crushing me slowly.I kept listening wanting to
tell him to stop,to give me some hope. Finally it came to a point after
he talked about the white man,and how everything was different at
their land.I stood up Kunta looked surprised.I said with the last
words I could muster. "I learned one thing". I did not wait for him to
answer."I learned how to stay alive" and with that I was done talking.

All of us saw a man with a key. I think we all had the same thought that that's the man we want. We did all of us attacked him then everyone got involved I knew we were going to win. There was no question about it. I was about to get this guy but he had a gun. Kunta Kinte threw a knife at him. Then I saw someone jump off the boat. I thought why did she do that. Next everyone was still fighting I threw a man overboard they were out numbered. I looked toward the front of the boat a young boy lit the fuze to the cannon. I didn't see that coming but I was prepared it blew us all over. I was in pain the next thing I knew everything was black.

  71. Kunta Kinte: I was bought for 140 pounds and was named Toby. I was bought by John Renalds. I am determine to break out of this strange land and come home. When I was in the crops I fell down, and found something sharp. I use the metal thing and try to break my shackles. Fiddler let me be free after he saw I broke my chains. I ran away and was found. when they dragged me back I was whipped until I said Toby.

  72. My husband and his slave Fiddler had just got back from getting a new slave. The girls and I ran out to go hug him.

I watched as the ship pulled in full of niggers. It is look like money in my pocket. Apparently some of them killed crew members. If there that strong they might sell for lots. It was time for branding I watched as mr. Slater walked in he was .looking for some slaves to do work. He bought one of them but was pretty well. That one earlier was yelling at a women slave. They must have some relationship.

I was going outside when I found Toby right outside. He was telling me why he came to where I lived now. Then he kissed me. He then told me that he could not stay here much longer anymore. He told me his plan too. Then next morning he told me to run away with him. I told him I do not want to go. He kept on asking but I said no no matter what. Then they herd us and he started to run off. Two men on horses chased after him. After that I did not hear of him. I kept on crying after that and kept crying for hours. I thought that they killed him but I doubted that he died. I was wondering how he is now. Is he hurt or was he fine or killed. Then when I was working I found out that he survived. I knew that he might never walk or he might walk someday. After a while I found out that he can walk again :). .

  76. I don't understand exactly what we're doing here. The mini-series spoke for itself. My people were torn apart and stripped of everything.
