Episode 5
Synopsis of Episode 5:
Episode Five of Roots is pretty much all about Chicken George.
At the beginning of the episode, we see that he has developed into one of the most skilled chicken handlers in the South. His master, Tom Moore raises and fights chickens in the sport of cockfighting, where roosters are pitted against each other until one dies. Very large bets are made on these fights and Chicken George is one of the best handlers in the business. At one of the cockfights, he learns from another slave that it is possible for a slave to buy his freedom.
On the way home from the cockfight, Chicken George and his master are stopped by white patrollers, who are totally freaked out by the Nat Turner Rebellion. Virtually all the white people in the South are freaked out by the idea of slaves rebelling and things get very ugly for a while. One of the ugliest things to happen during this period for Chicken George is that he finds out that Tom Moore is his biological father and that he will never let George buy his freedom – he is too valuable.
Tom Moore and Chicken George compete in a huge tournament. After drinking too much and getting carried away, Tom Moore promises George his freedom if they win, then bets way, WAY more money than he actually has.
Their bird loses and Tom Moore has to give Chicken George to the winner to cover his debts. George is sent to England – supposedly for three years. In fact, he is gone for fourteen. When he comes back, he is able to get his freedom from Tom Moore and becomes the first of Kunta Kinte’s decendents to win his freedom. He is eventually forced to leave the state, but his family remains very proud of him.
Chicken George’s oldest son, Tom gets in trouble with a pair of local brothers, the Brents, as the Civil War begins. When he catches one of the brothers attacking his wife, Tom kills him.
As the episode ends, the remaining brother tells Tom that he suspects he had something to do with the disappearance of his brother and vows that Tom “hasn’t seen the last” of him.

Mathilda episode 5
ReplyDeleteI love George, he's my best friend. I am worried about him, though. I like to think that we are going to hop the broom, have a happy marriage, and live happily ever after. But it won't come down to that. Slaves don't have that big of a privilege. But I love being around that funny, light hearted foolish boy. And he gets so into his stories, and can make his voice all funny. It attracts so much people, especially women, that its kind of awkward standing there when women are all surrounding him and cheering. It doesn't seem right. But, I guess he still loves me more than any other woman ( except maybe his mother), so I'm happy:). But the dark side of my memory was that horrible body out there laying on the grass! It was terrifying! We barely made it out of there before a cart came by. The man inside told George to talk to him about freedom and money and chicken fighting. I am proud of George, with his chickens and all that. I am so glad that I found that man.

ReplyDeleteI'm scared of Nat Turner. He is going around and killing everybody. With my two kids I don't know what I'm going to do. George is going to try to protect us all. I have to take all the knives and bring them to the main house so that everyone is secure. Today I found a body. Me and George where so shocked. The man was shot about three or four times. He has crossed the river. We run away in terror. Squire James comes by and ask George if he will have any rejections. Chicken George is going to kill master Tom. He just found out that masterTom is his daddy, he is very upset. George is leaving to go to a new master. I loved him so much, now he is gone. Kizzy is going to miss him the most. Now I'm home with Kizzy, and my two boys. He is back my George is back. I was in shock when I saw him. I feared I would never see him again. My heart is racing so fast. He found out Kizzy died he didn't seem to care about her I wonder why that is.

Hi I am Kizzy. I had to wash my son, he was filthy, I don't know what he was up to. After I finished Tom scared me. He ran in with a gun, and accused us for trying to kill him and his wife. We did none of the sort. At least I wouldn't let my boy do that. They are just blaming us, for what they think is happening. It's always the slaves that get blamed, they never get in trouble only us. I think I taught my son, to be a great man. I still strongly dislike Missy Ann, she could have defended me like she said, but she didn't. As soon as Tom walked out the door, I was sure to lock it. My son took a weapon from a dead man out in the fields. I didn't allow him, he is not doing that. That will get him, killed, and lord knows what else. No way is he killing him I will not allow my son to do that no matter how much he wants to, he just can't. I told him I love him, but he just can't do that. I found Missy in the wagon, this is a small world. Why would she be in there? I told him to tell his children he loves them, before he left. He told them all about Kunta Kinte! I was so proud. I hope this gets passed down and down again. He did an amazing thing.

My chicken got beat by John morre and chicken George. George is a very good cock trainer
He is one of the best. I want to buy him from John Moore but I don't think John Moore will sell him to me I went and talked to George we didn't talk much but I still want him.when I was in my wagon I saw chicken George I asked him if he had any problem coming to my plantation to train my best cocks that my friend is bring over if Tom Moore says yes . I need chicken George to win 30,000 dollars he's the best I have ever seen.
Mrs. Moore
ReplyDeleteMy husband is dead! I try to shoot Chicken George. I know he killed my husband. I always miss! He tries to tell me that he didn't kill him, he's only drunk. I can't believe him. I keep shooting, but I miss. He runs away. Then, I hear someone asking me what this is about. My husband! He's still alive! I can't believe it! I run to him! He asks me what that shooting was about. I tell him that the blacks are trying to kill us. We go into the house and he starts to get the gun loaded. He asks me why we are doing this. I tell him that Nat Turner went around from plantation to plantation killing slaves. He believes me. I show him what I found in my supper last night. Ground glass! They are trying to kill us! All the blacks are. He goes over to the cabin and tells the blacks that they better not play any games. Once he does that, I go get the pistol and tell all the blacks to get all their sharp items and bring them to the house. This is the only way that I feel safe. I make sure that I keep the guns pointed on him at all times. I don't want to risk anything. If they so try to come at me, I will shoot. You can't trust the blacks anymore. At any moment, they could spring, and attack. If we let that happen, we could be dead! I am shaking so bad, I can't stop. I am so worried about all this Nat Turner stuff. Years later: I tell my husband that we are running out of money. He needs to stop cock fighting. It's wasting our money. He's not winning any money. He says that he's to old for this, all this slave nonsense. I ask if he's gonna sell the slaves. He says all but Kizzy. I ask why. He says that she ain't worth selling. She's to old. I ask what Chicken George will say when he finds out that you split up his family. He just gazes out the window. I believe that I got him there. That was a good one.
Today something came true. Tom once told me about his father that went to England and was supposed to come back in four years. Well fourteen had passed and finally he came today he didn't know it but he told me his name. I just laughed it was crazy I couldn't explain it. I mean he is my grandpa. Then he flattered me about how his son picked a fine woman to marry.then he asked about him I took him to see him. It was a glorious reunion. They seemed so happy. It made my heart tickle to see them both so happy. It was even better when him and his mother reunited. There was just a little sadness about his mother Kizzy. Then when he met the whole family I thought they would never stop talking. The next day war was declared on us. I really don't know how I feel. Grandpa seemed to be pretty enlightened. He was joking around about it all happy. On the other hand he had to leave again. It was quite sad he said he'd be back again.mthe only thing I know fer sure is I'm not giving up on him.

I went up to someone's help while I was starving I asked them to feed me. I told them I was not a begger I said I ask people for food though then I saw the man that got in trouble and I tried running but he stopped me and told me it was my fault for him having a cracked rib. They got me food and I ate it. I told them about Martha then they asked where she was I said outside so I went and grabbed her and brought her inside. We were so thankful for them feeding us, also I felt so bad for getting the man in trouble. Then I rested. Then later I was outside with the blacks.they tried teaching me how to Handel slaves. When I asked they laughed at me when I was done. Then he and his brother showed me how to use a whip and make slaves do things for you. I told them I couldn't do it. He yelled at me. I told them they were teaching me how to be mean to people. He told me he was teaching me how to stay a live. I finally agreed to do what they said to do. I felt horrible about it. Then we were done and I went back to my cabin and rested for the day.

hear George talking about being super cock fighter. I want to be one now! It sounds really fun Nd great. He's rubbing his scarf over my
head, he's so funny. Master comes in and starts threatening us. Why?
Chicken George said he'd believe us, that we'd be okay and safe, I
don't understand. My dad came back and he was sad. Our master was saying if he trained a noter chicken he could be free. We were all crying. Daddy took momma and they talked. I would be so sad if he left. I love my father. He was going to England. He told me and my brother that I will always love you. I was so sad. As I watched my father so I wanted to cry my eyes out. It's going to be so hard without my father. 14 years later I was harming horse shows. My daddy came back. I was so happy to see him. He was wearing the nicest cloth I have ever say. He told me that I was a fine young man. Then he asked where my mother was. I told her that she was in the chicken coop. I bet my mother will be so happy to se her. He has been gone for so long I nearly could recognize him. I can't believe he came back I didn't think that he would come back. We went on a ride. He said I am so happy to have my first grandchild. It is really nice to finally talk to him. I have been waiting to talk to him. My master was there and he walked for water. His brother was next to him and my father had to give him water. He showed him the letter. They were making fun of him. We went back and we talked. I thought it was nice to get in touch with him. Our whole family was there and my daddy making a speech. He was leaving because he had 60 days to get back. I was sad to think that he was leaving aegean. I am happy for him because My great great grandpa wasn't to escape. I said a speech. That he was a salve and now he is free. Some day I hope to do what my father did. I went into the shed and I got beat up. I went back into the house and my that man that man came in for food. I asked him why he did that and he said because he was hungry. He sat their and asked if he could have a noter bowl for her wife. We let her come in and we let her eat. I felt bad for her. I wonder what daddy would have done? I went to bed with a warm part in my heart, but a pain in my cracked rib. In the morning I was telling him how to talk to slaves. He didn't know what to do. I showed him but he felt sad that black people get whipped. He was getting the hang of it.
Hi I am Eric Russell at the cockfight. I really want to win. I am watching every move to see what I am against. The crowd just starts going wild. I ask Tom Moure to have our cocks fight. I say 10,000 pounds and he looks like he agrees. Then, we put them in and have them go at it. I am carefully looking at them, and I feel a lot of confidents in myself. I really think I have a chance. We get them out and Tom looks like he will win, and asks me 20,000 pounds I take it thinking I can do it. We put the cocks back in and I really think I am going to lose, but then it looks like it might take longer. I am really curious what will happen next, because anything can happen at a cockfight anything. Then, my cock fought to the death and Tom’s died. I won 20,000 pounds! I am super happy. They look surprised and Tom’s slave looks sad to lose his cock, but he took the risk. I really think that this cockfight was really good this time. I think if you put your all into it you may be happy or disappointed. For instance Tom put double what we already put in and he was disappointed in his choice, but for me I am happy for his choice. I always just love it when I go to a cockfight, because usually I get something good out of it like this time. I can’t wait to go to the next cockfight, so then I can win some more and I just love winning. Everyone should love cockfights, just like me and some other people.

ReplyDeleteI was sitting there screaming yelling go go go. I had no worries about losing I knew that for sure that I would win. I was still excited when we one, because I still win money a who doesn't like money. I hopped in the back of my wagon while chicken George drove me home. I fell asleep on the way home, but on the way home I was awaken by my chicken training slave named chicken Joe. He and I were stopped by some white men with guns, who asked us what are names were and if we know Nat Turner. Who is a black man with a gang of other blacks with guns who go around and shoot tons and tons of white families for no reason at all. Just for the fun of killing. I fell back to sleep, when we arrived I was awakened by the sound of a rather loud gun shot. It was my wife, who was shooting a Chicken George. Then she screamed you killed him you killed him. I sat up and she said your not dead, I said no kidding. Then I went in to the house with her because she said she had something that she would like to show me, it was a piece of glass, she said that she had found it next to the table. She had said that she thought the slaves put glass in there food to kill them. After she told me that I went out to the cabin that the slaves were in with a shot gun, to talk to them.

ReplyDeleteMy name is cock fighter Eric Russell. I came to the cock fights to beat the man who wins all the time, Tom Moore. As I was waiting for the fight to start all of the drunks in the crowd were yelling and harassing me.
This angered me to he point that I wanted to up the wager to $10,000. Tom Moore agreed to this and I knew in the back of my mind there was no way I could lose.
After the first break in the fight to my surprise he yelled over and asked if I wanted to up he wager to $20,000. I took this bet and was getting ready to become richer.
I was very pleased that my bird had won. As I had just become $20,000 richer. When I confronted Moore about what he owed me he said that there was no way he could pay me. He was foolish to think that his bird could beat mine as I spent a lot of money training my bird.
I told him that I would take George instead of the money. Moore agreed and I brought him back to England with me.

I was back on the wagon with my slave Chicken George. I was sleeping in the back. I look up and see tow guys on horses. Yelling at George where he's from. I pop up and say What's going on here???? They ask for my name. My name is Tom Moore. I get really mad because they didn't think that was it. I took out my coat and started hitting them with it. I was very angry. They rode off. I grab my drink. George and I get into a conversation about Nat Turner. I grab a bottle out of the back and throw it out of the cart. It breaks. It was glass. That's how angry I was. When set off. I fell back asleep. I heard gun shots really close. Then a women's voice. It sounded like my wife's voice. I hear You killed Tom. I get up. I say "what's going on here." She runs over to me and give me a big hug saying " your alive." I responded with Of course I am alive women. We go inside. I was loading my gun. We starting talking about Nat Turner again like I was talking to George about. I walk into George's place. I held my gun. "You can't be trusted." George comes in later asking if we can be move to another plantation. I was mad. " you can't leave" I said. Your my best chicken fighter. He looked at me with and angry face. I could tell that he wasn't to happy about what I sad. He walked away. A couple days later he came rushing into the room. He said right away. "Are you my father??" In a old screaming voice. When he said that I was a little surprised. I started laughing.

ReplyDeleteGeorge has told us that Mrs. Moore has gone crazy. She tried to kill him when he came home. Also, he got shot in the arm. Kizzy cleaned it out, and he is all better. Then, George started talking about Nat Turner. He was also talking about how him and Master are best friends. Kizzy said that she once had a friend, and when she got sold off, her friend didn't do anything for her. Then, all of a sudden, Master came in. He said that everyone had to bring all their cooking knives to his house. He had a gun, and we were all very scared. After that, we went to his house to dispose of our knives. When we got to their house, Mrs. Moore had a gun, and was pointing it right at us as we disposed of our knives. Then, the next day, as I was picking mushrooms, I saw a hand right next to my garden. I called George over, and he said he had never seen him before. I asked him why he was smiling. He didn't reply. I think that it is because now he is free. He has crossed the river Jordan into Heaven! Then, the squire came driving up in his carriage. George and I went out to greet him. He wants George to come to with him to be free and help him with a cock fight that is worth $30,000. George went to ask Master. When he came out, he looked angry. Like he couldn't go. He stormed off to where we found the dead man. GEORGE IS LEAVING! I can't believe this! He lost a cock fight, and Master is sending him away. Before he leaves, he hugs the boys. Then, he comes to me. He tells me to take care of me. Then, we kiss, and I never want to let go of him. Then, he went over to Kizzy, and gave her a great big hug. She tells him to tell the boys again. He tells them who their grandfather is. He also tells them to be strong. With that, he leaves. We walk back with the boys. When we get back, I tell them that they will only have to wait three years. 14 years later
As I am feeding the chickens, I see George. He walks towards me. I tell him that my heart is beating so fast. Then, we hug. Next, he told me that he is free. Also, when I tell him that Kizzy died, he said that he already knew. Master Tom told him. Then, as we are having fun, Master Harvey came. He asked what we were doing. We replied that he was Chicken George. He said that it was a pleasure to meet him. He asked if George wouldn't mind to stay, and only work a little. When we are in bed, getting ready to go asleep, we are talking for a while. I tell him to listen to me. I tell him that he must stay. I tell him that I am married to a free man. Then, we hug. The next morning, George is back to his usually joking around. Then, he will leave. Before he does, I give him a great big hug, for fear that I will not see him again. Then he tells the story of his grandfather Kunte Kinte, and how he told Kizzy words from Africa, and how Kizzy told him some African words. Then, my son goes on how Kizzy gave birth to the man known as Chicken George. His daddy. Then, the next day, a white man appears at our door step and asks for some food. I tell him to come in, and sit down while I make some food for him. As I am getting the food ready, Tom jumps up to him. He tells us that he is the cause for his cracked ribs. Then, the man tells us his name. His name is George. We tell him that we will call him Old George. Then, he asks if he can bring in his wife Martha. I say of course, and he goes out to fetch his wife. When she comes in, she does something with her skirt. It looks like she is bowing, but she also holds her skirt in a funny sort of way. I just smile. I am serving food to Master and his family. Master's wife says that she will donate all her silverware to the Confederacy. She tells me to go along with her to fetch it. I am delivering a baby. The baby died right away. Martha is fine. I walk out to tell George that Martha is fine.
He says that he didn't hear any baby cry. I tell him that the baby didn't make it, but Martha is young and will have many more in her time. He falls into my arms. Then, when we are having the funeral, he says that we are all his friends. I have never heard this from a white before. It is like music to my ears. Then, we all started singing.

I am Martha Johnson. I am from the south with my husband. We are poor and don't have any money, food, or a home. George, my husband made me wait outside of this big house. George tells me to come in the house, after he has become friends with the people inside. They gave him food and I hopefully getting some too. We are surrounded by blacks in the house. I stare at them for awhile and say, "Please to meet you." A couple days later I was having my baby. George and I will finally be parents! After I gave birth I found out the baby didn't make it out alive. I lay in bed restless, and I eventually fall asleep. The next day we have a funeral for Ethan Johnson my son who died I stood in the crowd listening to the choir sing. I just stand in shock about this happening. I listen to Tom and my husband, George say a couple words about my son. I was balling my eyes out, I was very heart broken. The men and women who were at the funeral watched us as we walked away they were still singing those beautiful songs. I could really feel how bad they felt for me all coming to me and hugging me. George gives me a hug and holds me in his arms and walks me back to our home.

I saw my black Tom with his dad George. I was really thirsty so I told Tom to give me some water. As usual he obeyed. But I wanted his dad to get me some water. He was just looking to fancy for a black. I told George to give my brother some water. He ignored me at first. I told him again to give my brother some water. He said that he was a free man. I told him that it doesn't matter he will always be black and I will always be white. So it doesn't matter if you are free or not you're not going to be treated with the same respect as whites. Tom helped out his dad and told me that his dad was free. But I'm the type of person that needs proof. I told him to show me his freedom papers. He did but he must be dumb because it said if he stayed for more than 60 days he would become a slave again. My brother and I thought that that was hilarious. I threw his papers and left. I was so excited to hear that war was going to happen soon!

Ol' George Johnson
18? Years Later
I hear the door creak open. Who the? I wonder. I keep quiet and hide
to sneak on him. When he comes close, I jump on him. Get outta my way!
I scream at him. I run out of the room!
I knock on the door.
"Ma'am, can you feed me some scraps?" I was hungry, and tired. I
needed food. I start telling the old slave about my family. A young black grabs
my jacket and yells at me.
"I'm just hungry,' I replied innocently. I am innocent though.
"Whatchu playin?" The slave asks me. I eye him and sit down as the old
black puts food on the table. They ask for my name.
"George Johnson," I reply. They laugh at me.
"We better call you Ol' George!" They said. I start eating. I run out
of the room, to get Martha.
"Martha, it's okay, come on in!" I tell her and grab her shoulder. I
proudly present her. She curtsies and says she's please to meet them.
I walk out to the carry with the Black boys. I tell them how in the
north where I come from, there ain't barely any slaves. They look at
me like what?? They teach me about what us whites do to them. He
teaches me how they get whipped and how the whites talk to them. I
watch intensely. I can't believe they do that stuff to them.
"No, I couldn't do that!" I say honestly.
"Are you teaching me to be mean, Tom?" I watch his face, with
curiosity and a hint of anger in my voice. He tells me that I have to
to stay alive. I guess they don't get treated equally Down here. This
is not gonna be a joy ride.
I run to the Reynolds door and knock fast.
"My wife is about to have a baby help please !" I tell her. She runs
to help my wife. I wait and Tom comes out and we talk. His mom comes
back and tells me my baby is sleeping. Dead.
I sit by my babies grave, and cry.
"He would've grown up to be a good man, just like you," Tom Says. The
blacks sing. And I walk away. I was hurting so bad, I just couldn't
even talk to anyone right now.

It was the first competition. I am a trainer now. There was another trainer who I talked too. He said that if he can do it I can. Master and I left to go back. Master was sleep so I decided to sing. All of a sudden four white men shot their guns and stopped our wagon. One of them threatened to shoot me. Then they asked me if I know a man named Nat Turner but I didn't. Master woke up and told me too keep going. When I got home no one was outside. It was strange. Master's wife had a gun and thought I killed Master. I kept tellin her no I didn't, I didn't but she ain't believe me and she almost shot me. It scrapped the side of me though. My momma patched it up and she told me about Nat Turner. I say Master will trust me. He is my best friend. I was wrong. He came in with a gun pointed at all of us and said we bring all things to the main house but other than that we may not go to the main house. I and Matilda were out when I heard her yell my name. Once I ran over I saw a man, dead. We left him there, he had a gun. On our way back a man in a carriage stopped and said he would buy me and the rest of my family. I ran to Master but Master tell me even if I had enough money he won't let me go. I'm mad now. I am going to get that dead man's gun. My momma stops me though. She tell me Master Moore my daddy. I go to England now in a wagon. I wave good bye to my family.
I rode up in a horse and asked a woman if she know of a Tom she say that Tom is her man. I say he is my son . She bring me too him and we hug. I missed him so much. He tell me that his momma is in the chicken coop. I go off and find her. On my way a little Gil runs into me and then my wife come out yelling for the chickens. Mr. Moore is the winner! I just stand there in a disappointed way and I have a disappointed look. I am watching the cockfight. Tom tells me too make it 20 thousand dollars. I say to Tom "you Sir have a bet." George puts his chicken in the cockfight. It is chicken George's chicken against Tom Moore's chicken. Now it is on! Both of them are fighting! After all Moore's wins! George's chicken dies. After the fight I start talking to Tom Moore. We just don't agree on anything. As it is we are talking about amounts of money for the cockfight. Kizzy Reynolds
Hi, my name is Kizzy Reynolds. I have a son named George. I call him Chicken George. I'm in my house cleaning off George's arm because he cut hisself. It doesn't look very good at all. George is being rude to me. He is trying to be friends with a white man. I told him no but he won't listen. I just feel like he shouldn't do that because of Nat Turner but he might not kill home because he is a black. I'm so sad because George was going to kill Tom Moore but I was afraid that Tom would kill him. I was so sad when my boy George left to go to England. I didn't cry though. He said he would be back in three years. So I told him before he left to tell his kids all about my dad, Kunta Kinte and to make sure to alway be themselves and know who you really are. Then I gave him a big hug to say goodbye. Then he left. I was so very sad but I didn't show my feelings. I was happy for him to go to England. I knew I wasn't going to live longer so I hoped I would still be alive before he came home. I didn't think I would see him again. I hope that he gets his freedom. I knew he might but I don't know yet. He said he would be back in three years. 3 years later he is still not home. Then a carriage came up and asked me if the lady could have some water. So I got some water for the lady and gave it to her. Then I looked at her closely and I asked if she was Missy Ann . She said yes but she didn't know who I was. She told me to fetch her some more water. So I did and I spit in it.

ReplyDeleteMy dad is going away. He is going to be gone for a couple of years and then he will be free. I am disappointed but then again I am happy for him. I'm crying with my brother. Then my dad tells us about our grandpa. He tells us about our African history and our grandpa's ups and downs. We watch my dad go. Forever he is gone and I might not even see him one more time. I hope I will be able to.
18 years later
I am working in my shed being a blacksmith like I am. I see my dad and I run up and hug him. I am in total shock. I never knew in my whole life that I was going to see my own dad ever again. I am so happy to see him again. He made my day. A little while later my dad meets my son. We all get on a horse carriage. Then a white man comes over. The white man says," You are welcome to be here Chicken George." A while later we go on a horse ride. We stop the horses and walk near this building. I pump some water from a water pump for my dad and I. There are these white men next to the water pump. One of the men says that he needs to see my dad's papers. They don't believe that my dad is a free man. He tells my dad that if he is here for more than 60 days he is still a nigger, not a freeman. I hate it when white men treat black men so differently. It isn't a appropriate thing to do. Days later I am working in my shed. I hear somebody whispering my name. There is a white man appearing from the corner of my shed. He is asking me for help. I walk away and I get on my horse. When I come back he is in the barn and he is hurting my wife Irene. I fight with him. I let out all of my anger out on this white man. I find a bucket of water near my horse, and I shove his face in it. I drown him until he is cold and isn't moving. I killed the white man. The next day there is a white man on the horse. He is asking everyone if he had seen that other white man that I killed last night. I am trying to hold in my emotions and not trying to seem guilty. He goes off on his horse. Then he comes back and gets real close to me. He can see my bruising on my face from the fight. He asks me if I had anything to do with the white man and I told him no. I told him that oh Wildhorse kicked me in the face I was plowing. He believed me and went on this horse.
I motioned one of the slaves to come toward me. I looked at them wondering what the other person is. He told me his name is George. I didn't really care, I was wondering what he was doing here. I knew he had to have paper to be free so I asked him for it. He pulled it out fast. He must have been eager to be with his family. I looked at it and handed back to him fast. I asked him why he was here. He told me he wanted to be with his family. I asked him why he is allowed to stay here. He told me they said he could. I was talking to someone about start working. I could tell he was startled. I watched him walk away. I ate at the table with some other someone told the group. I looked for a man I didn't see him. I asked some blacks but they said nothing. I noticed one of them had some bruises. I asked him what happened. He told me his reason. I looked at him carefully wondering if that actually happened. I hoped he was not lying. I left on my horse looking for him again. I hope I find him I was thinking.

A couple weeks later after Tom and Chicken George where coming home from a cock fight I had herd about this Nat Turner Rebellion I was so nervous that George killed my Tom so when they got home and I didn't see Tom i freaked out and shot at George I missed him. after missing a couple times Tom woke up. Squire James
I was in my carriage going from Mr. Moore's place. When I'm driving out I see Chicken George and a girl by the grass. I stop my carriage and they come over to me. I want Chicken George to be my slave so badly! In my opinion, he such a good cock fighter/trainer. I start to talk to him. I tell him that I had just finished talking to Tom Moore about buying Chicken George as my slave. I tell him that I would really like it if he could be MY cock trainer. He looks at me with bright eyes. He asks me if all of his family can come. He introduces the girl that is standing by him as his girlfriend. I tell him that he would be able to bring his whole family. He really likes that! I know that it won't take a simple gesture to make him really want to be my slave, so I also let him know that after a while of training my chickens for cock fights... I will set him free. I can see his eyes light up when I say that. I mean isn't that what every nigger dreams of? Becoming free?! I tell him I will talk to Mr. Moore about it, but I know that Tom will not like my idea. If I think that Chicken George is a good cock fighter, I'm sure Tom does too! Pretty soon is the cock fighting championship. I will see Mr. Moore and Chicken George there, I will be fighting them. I'm sure I will win. I win every year, this year will not be any different. I'm sure of it. I love to see Tom every year because every single year he thinks he might actually win! He doesn't stand a chance against my chicken and his trainer.
When we arrive at the cock fight I step in and see Tom and George, and a bunch of people in the stands here to watch. We get ready and the ref of the cock fight has my trainer and Chicken George enter the chicken circle. The ref declares that the match has started! At first it doesn't look good. Chicken George is fighting good. When they set their chickens down to let them fight by there own I get nervous. It doesn't look like my chicken will stand it! But I know he will. I have an amazing chicken for the fight and it will beat Chicken George's chicken. The first round goes by and they both pick up their chickens. The second fight begins, and it doesn't take long before my chicken kills George's chicken! Victory is ours! I see Chicken George start to cry, cradling his chicken. I feel a spite of pity, but not for long. You see at the beginning of this match Mr. Tom Moore got a little too confident and bet 20,000 dollars on his winnings. After the match as we go back outside he tells me that he doesn't have that kind of money. I have a way that I can suit this problem out... I think that I am going to try to get me a new slave.

ReplyDeleteMy daddy is going to England. At this age, I can't process it. Life without my daddy... I just can't imagine it. And, with Grandma Kizzy coming to the age where she might fall asleep for good, who knows how Mama will manage. How Tom will manage. How I will manage. How us, as a family, will manage. Daddy come over to me and Tom and kneels down in front of us, a weak smile on his face. I think about smiling, but there's nothing to be happy about. He takes his chicken hat, the one thing dearest to him next to his family. He holds it in his hands for a few seconds, admiring it. That I grin at, knowing how joyful it always makes him. He sighs and looks up at me, and suddenly places it on my head, giving it a light tap. I reach my fingers up and touch the soft velvet, surprised at his actions. His genuine chicken hat... he's giving it to me. He looks at us, his eyes shining with tears and hugs us. I wrap my arms around him and sob, louder than I know I should. But who really cares? I have the right to be broken at this point. It's one of the few rights I have. He stands up and looks over at Mama, then takes her hands in his own.
"Take care of the children," he says. "Take care of yourself, too." He kisses her and then stands back, looking at me, my brother, Mama and Grandma Kizzy. "Don't you never forget who you are," he says, then looks down at us kids. "Your great grandfather was Kunta Kinte, and he was proud. And you be proud too. We're gonna stay together, even when we fall apart." I feel tears slipping down my face, and as he and master ride away in their wagon, I run after them, calling daddy's name over and over. But Mama catches up to me and pulls me away. Good bye, Daddy.
* * FOURTEEN YEARS LATER * *
I haven't seen Daddy in fourteen years. As we ride on horses together, I can't stop grinning. I can't believe he's finally back. After Grandma Kizzy died, everything was a mess, especially Mama. I feel like weights have been lifted off my shoulders. Daddy starts to explain our family roots (wink wink :D), and I listen carefully, wanting to know every detail.
"Kunta Kinte, he was sold into slavery, long time ago. They cut off half his foot so he couldn't run away. And Kunta Kinte, he had a daughter, Kizzy."
"Grandma Kizzy?" I ask.
Daddy nods and continues. "Kunta taught Kizzy many things from the Africas, and then Kizzy had a son, who everyone called Chicken George."
"And Chicken George... He become a free man. My daddy," I say very faintly, almost silently.
Daddy looks at me with tears in his eyes and rides away, and all I can do is sit on the broad horse and think. I look down at my hands, knowing that somewhere in my blood, there is pure African circulating through. Free man's blood. Because my great- grandfather, my grandmother, and my own Papa are free. And soon, I will be too.

This is finally happening the chicken cockfight finals. I've been waiting to judge this for a very long time. What I think is going to happen is chicken George and Tom Moore will win. The reason I think that is because they've been really good now with the chicken they have, undefeated so far. Now I've got to start the match up now, I'm really curious about who's going to win, both of them have very good chickens but sooner or later I'm going to start this match so everyone will find out what happens. Both of them are ready lets see who wins. Tom Moores bird is heavier, I wonder if they still want to fight. Wow $10,000 is the price the looser has to pay it seems like both of them are very confident. Both of them are doing really good now I have to call for halftime. Wow now $20,000 dollars is the losers price to pay. Let the fight begin! It looks like Eric Russels bird might actually win. "Eric Russel is the winner of the cockfight!" I am amazed I really thought Tom Moore would win, but i guess I'm wrong.

My dad has left for a cock fight. From what I heard it is a great rival to Tom Moore. There will be high bets I am sure. I know Tom well, and I am sure he will raise the bets. I think it will be over 10,000 dollars. They just returned. The bet was 20,000. They lost the fight. They have to sell dad... They promised 3 years. I will never forget that my grandpa is a Mandinka worrier. He told me that when he left. I will never forget that moment. Thirteen years later. I have become a blacksmith. Pretty good at it too. I was working on a horse shoe. Then I heard a horse coming in. I thought it was master looking for the shoe. I wasn't done with yet. I turned around and a saw an amazing white horse. I saw the man and he looked familiar. The it hit me. It was my dad! I couldn't believe it. So many things were running though my head. I remembered when he left. I remember the Mandinka tribe. He hasn't changed much at all. It is unbelievable that he has returned. So me and dad went for a ride. He told me the whole story of my grandpa. It is quite amazing.

Me and my husband have arrived at a farm. We are very hungry. My husband knocks on one of the doors he is taken inside. When he doesn't come out of the cabin for awhile I fear what might have happened to him. Then he calls me into the cabin. When I walk in at first I am scared but then I see that the people in side of the cabin are very nice. I have become pregnant. Well I am giving birth I can't wait for my new child. Then when I am done birthing I am told that my baby has died. I am really sad. I can't believe that my baby has died. A little while after that we have a burial ceremony this makes me cry but it also is good that we gave him a proper burial ceremony. If we didn't do this I would be grieving for the rest of my life

I was nervous as I waited outside for George. I was anxious to see if they gave him any food. He knocked on the door of a home to ask for food. We are so hungry and I am pregnant. I am tired. When George finally came outside for me, he urged me to come in. I was unsure. He told me that it would be alright. I could tell by the look on his face it would ok. When I walked through the door of the kitchen, I could see them looking at me. They looked at my face, then my belly, and then my face again. The whole time they were smiling. I told them I was "Pleased to meet them." I really didn't know what to expect, but I could tell that George was confident. My husband told me that the master of the house hired him to be the Overseer and he would also give us a place to sleep. That evening, I could tell the baby was ready to come so George went for help. Matilda came to help deliver the baby. There were complications and the baby died. I was so sad. I've never known such sadness. I know there will be another time for us to start a family. We named the baby Ethan and we buried him. Tom spoke at the burial. He said if Ethan were to have grown up, he would have been a good man like his daddy. I agree with Tom. Everyone sang at the end. I did not. I couldn't. George and I held each other as we walked away.
Evan Brent: Chicken George and his son rode up on a horse and I tell his son Tom that I want water. Then I told Chicken George to get me water. When he refuses I am super mad, and tells to give me his papers. He says he is a free man and i don't believe him. When he does I just laugh and say "We got a rule in this state if you live in this state for 60 days you are a normally darky." I walk into the saloon just laughing away. I feel happy because it was funny. I am eating lunch with my family and telling them we need all the help we can get to find some silver to make money. I am feeling nervous that we might go bankrupt. They tell me we can't find any help finding money. Then a slave named Matilda tells us she will donate her silverware to make money. Jimmy my brother was drown by a nigger named Tom I don't arrest him or kill him for now but I tell him he won't see the last of me. I am depressed to know that my brother is dead but confused to if it was Tom.

My dad is home! I am so happy to see him, I can't explain. We go on a ride together with my brother, it is very fun. My papa is a free man! I am so proud of him he will be my role model forever. We have a great time that day but the next day my papa has to leave so that he can be free for his whole life. I am very sad to see him go, but it seems much harder for my mom. Soon everything is back to normal, but then my brother saw a white man trying to take food so he scared him away, and the masters thought that Sam was trying to steal food so they cracked his ribs. Wile my family was patching him up a white man came knocking at our door asking for food. The white man was the guy that made Sam have cracked ribs, but we still gave him food because he seemed very hungry.
Hi I'm ol George me and my wife need some food because we ain't got no money. I got to be quite some body is coming in. Oh gosh he saw me, I don't want to get him in trouble or anything but there ain't nothing I can do. Oh man he took my darn food and now that was almost my last chance. Me and my wife are gonna starve to death now, and we haven't even gotten are first born yet.
ReplyDeleteThank gosh these nice people are giving us really good food. They are very kind and nice masters given me a job, but Tom says I'm being to nice I really like them though I don't want to hurt nobody.

Evan Brent- fill up water
ReplyDeleteI see a cart come by and I see it is Tom and someone else is riding with him. I call him over to get me a drink of water and he does it like he should. After all I am his boss so he has to do what I tell him to do. He fills up my cup like i tell him to do. I take a drink and I tell him my brothers thirsty as well Tom goes to do it and I stop him and dump the water on his friend. I tell him to do it and I call him a slave. He tells me he isn't a slave. Tom tells me he is his father and he is a free man. I ask to see his papers, my brother what's to whip him, but I tell him we can't go whipping free men. I look them over and they are real. I tell the " free man" that we have a rule in this state that if a free slave is in this state for 60 days he back to being a slave. I laugh along with my brother and toss his papers on the ground still laughing and my brother and I laugh back inside. Te next day at the telegraph department they said that we have declared war. We all cheered we were so excited. I get up and I say are we gonna whop them Yankees and every body cheeredI say it again and they cheered even louder. Then we sing our song we were all happy. I ask him for his papers again and he gives them to me. I go to the plantation that Tom was in I asked why weren't the horse shoes done. I tell him to speed up and I road of. I heard a noise and I see a slave with food and I think he is trying to steel food. So I tell my brother to beat him. We will help the confederacy with the war and my wife want to help as well, but she knows the consequences for this. My brother has been missing for three days and we search every where and I believe that a black did it. I found one that looked suspicious and I told him he hasn't seen the last of me. Then I road off.
Chicken George
ReplyDeleteWe won another cock fight! Yay! As we were packing up, the other cock handler told me about buying your freedom. Mr. Moore slept in the back of the trailer as we headed back. Inspired but the moment, I begun to sing. I sing a song about being free. But my voice came to a halt. I could hear horse feet clomping ahead. They were getting closer...
Suddenly, two men on horseback appeared on he dirt trail.
"You seen Nat Turner?" The first man asked.
"N- no, sir," I stammered. The man looked at me, then at the now awake Mr. Moore. Obviously drunk, he convinced the men to leave. We continued down the trial. When I drove the wagon into the farm toward the house, something... Wasn't right...
Suddenly, Mrs. Moore jumped out of nowhere with a gun!
"You killed him!" She screamed. I dove for cover, yelling,"He's just sleeping!"
She didn't seem to hear me, and fired. Pain seared my arm as the bullet skimmed my skin.
Mr.Moore woke up when the gun sounded.
"You're alive!" Screamed Mrs. Moore.
"'Corse I am," replied Mr. Moore, still obviously drunk.
After they went back up to the house, I went to my family's small shack. Kizzy dressed my wound as I told them what happened.
Suddenly, Mr.Moore burst into the door holding a shotgun. He strobes there a moment, then spoke.
"If I catch wind that any of you niggas be plotting against us, I'll shoot you all dead!" He yelled before turning and leaving to go back up to the house.
Well, I figured out how much it would cost to buy my family. $6000. It would take awhile, but I think I'll be able to save up enough eventually. After I'd crunched the numbers, my wife Mathilda and I went out in the fields to harvest some crops. When we got down one row, there, lying on the ground, was a man, dead. He was... Smiling for some reason...
Suddenly, a coach appeared with a squire in it. He said he'd seen me cock fighting, and wanted to buy me. He said he'd give me my freedom in 5 years. I then asked him to buy the rest of my family, so that I wouldn't be separated from my children and wife. He agreed, saying he didn't want an unhappy cock handler. We would all be freed!

I was in a shed, and I was hiding. Then a boy came in, but I ran out as fast as I could. Because I didn't want to be seen... I walked up to a house. I was hungry. Then some nice lady, let me and and she fed me. I was very happy. But then I think it was the same boy I was startled by last night. Then he told me to finish my plate. They asked for my name. I told them my name. I asked for another helping. But I told them it was for my wife Martha... Then one kind gentlemen said he will give me and my wife a place to sleep. Then Tom was showing me how how to use a whip. Then he told me to ask him to tell him how to make Louise to fetch water. But I asked kindly. Then he showed me how to. But I didn't like how he was showing me. But I gave in. It felt wrong. I had became. An overseer... I had to run to Sam's door, as fast as I could. I told him that Martha was having a baby! I was shaking, nervous. Then Matilda came out and told me that Martha was fine, but the baby. Wasn't. I found out my baby had died.. Later we had the funeral for my baby. Matilda and I were very sad. But I was grateful for my friends (blacks)...
